Primary Purpose of this Position:Â The NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island is looking to hire an enthusiastic, dynamic, and organized individual to join our team as the Volunteer Services Coordinator. Â Reporting to the Education Curator, this position will be responsible for managing and overseeing all aspects of our Volunteer Program. Â Our diverse program spans across multiple departments and provides volunteers with the ability to be involved in interpretation, diving, food prep, and more. Â The Volunteer Services Coordinator will provide our volunteers with engaging opportunities and support to help further the aquarium's mission of inspiring appreciation and conservation of North Carolina's aquatic environments. Â

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Actively recruit volunteers, define volunteer roles and responsibilities, provide orientation and training and organize professional development opportunities for volunteers.
  • Create and update our volunteer manual and program guides.
  • Oversee all volunteer schedules, coordinate volunteer activities, and track volunteer service hours.
  • Maintain active communication with the STAR Center, Dive Safety Officer, and Marine Mammal Stranding Network to coordinate volunteer activities appropriately.
  • Evaluate and coach volunteers, coordinate volunteer recognition activities, and serve as the Aquarium's representative to other volunteer organizations.
  • Work with the Education Department to support all educational programming and educational materials. Â This could include providing touch pool or STAR center coverage, leading public education programs, and providing support in educational content design for programs and exhibits.
  • Lead programs such as job shadows, high school internships, group volunteer projects, and teen conservation programs

Position/Physical Requirements

  • Weekend, evening, and holiday work will be required.
  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license within 90 days of employment.Â
  • Must have organizational skills, be able to handle shifting priorities, and be able to meet deadlines.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to

  • Experience managing a volunteer program at a zoo, aquarium, park, museum, nature center, or tourist attractions.Â
  • Experience working with and supervising adults and youth.Â
  • Demonstrated customer service experience.Â

Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution;

OR

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diplomaÂ

AND

four years of work in volunteer services enabling the applicant to acquire the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Section/Unit Description: The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located in Manteo, NC, nine miles from the Atlantic coastline in Nags Head. The 61,000 square-foot facility is sited on 16 acres overlooking the Croatan Sound and houses over 2,200 animals. More than 280,000 guests visit the aquarium each year to see a large array of sharks, learn about sea turtle conservation, participate in a variety of programs, enjoy the beauty of the area, and learn why North Carolina's waterways are so special. Â
