GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Within the Department of Transportation, to perform a wide variety of skilled duties involved in the operation, inspection, maintenance and repair of a fleet of diesel and gasoline powered trucks and motorized heavy equipment; and to do related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Assignments of inspections to be made and repair work to be done are issued by a superior; work methods are subject to approval, but not constantly supervised; all work is reviewed upon completion for satisfactory results and may be inspected closely for conformity with technical requirements.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Usually none, although may direct the activities of a subordinate assigned to assist.
 
Within the Department of Transportation, to perform a wide variety of skilled duties involved in the operation, inspection, maintenance and repair of a fleet of diesel and gasoline powered trucks and motorized heavy equipment.

To inspect, maintain and perform repair activities on various pieces of diesel and gasoline powered heavy equipment including but not limited to heavy-duty trucks and trailers, excavators, large and smaller bulldozers, graders, cranes, dump bodies, snow plows, backhoes, electronic message boards, street sweepers, aerial cranes, utility mowing tractors hydraulic equipment, other road maintenance machinery and related mechanical equipment.

To diagnose, service and repair various systems found on pieces of heavy equipment such as mechanical and electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, computer controlled automatic and manual transmissions, high voltage generators and pneumatic systems.

To inspect, adjust, repair, rebuild and replace, when necessary, transmission, diesel engines, main bearing assemblies, steering assemblies, front and rear axles, differentials, air and hydraulic braking systems,, starters, fuel injection systems, and SCR systems.

To perform such tasks as computerized engine diagnostics, safety lighting repair, resurfacing, reseating and grinding valves; honing cylinders, replacing bushings, bearings, and gaskets; timing motor; aligning front wheels; relining brakes; inspecting and repairing alternator systems.

As a licensed commercial motor vehicle operator performing safety sensitive functions, to be responsible for providing a safe work environment at all times for co-workers and the traveling public by following established work rules and the rules on drug use and alcohol misuse; safety sensitive functions means at all times, from the time an operator begins to work or is required to be in readiness to work until the time he or she is relieved from work and all responsibilities for performing work; all times includes waiting to be dispatched, inspecting, servicing or conditioning, at the driving controls in operation, other than driving time, loading or unloading, supervising or assisting, remaining in readiness to operate, and repairing, obtaining assistance or remaining in attendance upon a disabled commercial motor vehicle.

To perform incidental welding operations on various equipment, fabricates, modifies, and installs special equipment or replacement parts using mills, lathes, welders, torch sets and cutting saws.

To perform maintenance checks and adjustments on such things as fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches; changes filters and oil, and lubricates vehicles and motor driven equipment; repairs and services track drive sprockets, idler wheels, hard bars, track adjusters, hydraulic reverses, final drives, brake bands, steering clutches and hydrostatic transmissions; tunes gas and diesel engines, services valves, fuel filters and turbo chargers, and pressure checks fuel filters, adjust injector heights, fuel racks and governors; and services, diagnoses, repairs and maintains speed tandem drive axels with air or electric shift, hydrostatic driven, heavy duty multi-axle suspensions, both conventional steel or air springs.

To diagnose problems, disassembles units, repairs or replaces parts, and reassembles units in the following systems: brakes, cooling, drive, electrical, exhaust and emissions control, heating and air conditioning, hydraulic, air, steering and suspension and coupling devices.

To repair tools and garage equipment.

To make urgent and emergency repairs on the road.

To operate a snowplow, truck or other equipment as required.

To maintain a continuous knowledge of the operating, safety and maintenance standards of all current and newly acquired trucks, equipment, utility vehicles and passenger models utilized within fleet operations; attends specialized training and familiarization workshops dealing with innovations in heavy equipment operations, repairs and maintenance.

To test and troubleshoot hydraulic system using meters and gate valves; adjust and repair hydraulic valves, fabricate hydraulic hoses, test hydraulic pumps and motors.

To generate appropriate documentation within the fleet maintenance and management computerized system for the initiation and tracking of work orders through to completion, both in-house and the general marketplace, and vehicle service logs and records.

To review invoice documents for work performed by private sector sources for appropriateness or work scope and accuracy; demonstrates continuous efforts to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality service.

To perform the functions of this classification in a variety of environmental and inclement weather conditions.

To do related work as required.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods employed in diesel truck and motorized heavy equipment repair and adjustments; considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of diesel engines; the ability to locate and correct mechanical defects in diesel trucks and motorized equipment; a skill in the use of tools and equipment employed in the repair of diesel trucks and motorized heavy equipment; a knowledge of the safety issues and precautions of the trade in the use of tools, equipment, and supplies used in the repair of equipment; the ability to perform a wide variety of tasks in the repair or rebuilding of motorized heavy equipment without detailed instructions or close supervision; capacity to perform work while exposed to extreme weather conditions; to perform heavy lifting as assignments require; to knowledgeably exercise safety precautions and common prudence as applied to work performance
in roadway settings, materials and fuels handling and storage, and equipment operation; a working knowledge of maintenance management computerized software; and related capacities and abilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: Such as may have been gained through: graduation from a senior high school supplemented by completion of a vocational or trade school program in the field of diesel truck or heavy duty truck/heavy equipment repair and maintenance; and

Experience: Such as may have been gained through: considerable employment as a general diesel mechanic for a construction company, trucking fleet operation, or provider of diesel truck equipment repair services.
Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Upon appointment and continually thereafter:

1.1. Must possess, at least, a valid Rhode Island Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with airbrakes endorsement as a condition of employment.

1.2. Compliance with the USDOT Federal Regulations of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and the State of Rhode Island's Drug & Alcohol Testing Program Policy & Procedures is a mandatory requirement and a condition of continued employment.

1.3. A physical examination as evidenced by a physician's certificate.
Experience with snow removal equipment and other heavy equipment repair. Experience as a heavy fleet mechanic preferred.

Salary : $61,460 - $70,983
