Class Definition
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To perform landscape gardening work at a state institution or other state owned property; and to do related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives assignments and instructions from a superior; work is usually reviewed upon completion.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: As required, may supervise and review the work of laborers.
Illustrative Examples of Work Performed
To perform landscape gardening work at a state institution or other state owned property involving:
the seeding, mowing, rolling, grading, fertilizing and watering of lawns;
the planting, transplanting and cultivating of shrubs, trees, decorative plants, flowers or vegetables;
the controlling of insect pests and plant diseases through the use of special equipment and materials such as spraying apparatus and insecticides; and
the maintenance of gardening equipment and tools, including the cleaning, painting and making of minor repairs thereto.
To propagate plants from seeds or cuttings in a cold frame or greenhouse and to perform other duties of a gardener in a greenhouse.
During the off season, when not required to perform gardening duties, to assist skilled or building maintenance workers; or, to perform watchman or miscellaneous custodial duties; or, to perform general labor work including removal of snow from walks, sanding walks, etc.
To do related work as required.
Required Qualifications For Appointment
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A working knowledge of the practices and techniques of landscape gardening and of plant propagation; the ability to lay out and cultivate flower beds and care for lawns, scrubs and trees; the ability to control temperature, ventilation and humidity in a greenhouse; the ability to understand and carry out written or oral instructions; the ability to use and make minor repairs to gardening tools and equipment; and related capacities and abilities.
Education And Experience
Education: Such as may have been gained through: completion of eight school grades; and
Experience: Such as may have been gained through: employment in landscape gardening work.
Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
Special Requirements
At the time of appointment must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate.
