What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Attorney II - Appellate Screening position at State of Rhode Island?
Within the Appellate Screening Unit of the Supreme Court and under the supervision of the Chief Staff Attorney and the direction of the Court, the Staff Attorney II’s duties include but are not limited to: reviewing cases appealed to the Supreme Court for compliance with procedural rules, preparing pre-briefing memoranda that summarize the facts and issues, and identifying cases that may be appropriate for summary disposition; preparing in-depth written reports on cases scheduled for oral argument before the Court that include careful review of the trial transcripts and electronic record, summary of the relevant factual history and travel, independent legal analysis of the legal issues, and scrutiny of the accuracy of parties’ citations; and recommendations to the Court. The attorney will perform other related duties as directed by the Court or the Chief Staff Attorney.
Must possess a law degree from an ABA accredited law school and be a licensed attorney in good standing with 3-5 years of experience as an attorney. If not currently a member of the Rhode Island Bar, must gain admission within one year of accepting position. Working knowledge of the Rhode Island Supreme Court’s rules and procedures is required. Demonstrated experience in legal research and outstanding writing skills necessary. Must have great attention to detail, and excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Clerkship in a court system beneficial.
