MISSION :
It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.
JOB PURPOSE :
Under the general supervision of the Building / Grounds Supervisor, this position will be responsible for skilled horticulture work on the Department of Juvenile Justice property to include pruning, planting, troubleshooting and general work regarding maintenance. Will also be responsible for ensuring all equipment assigned is maintained in working condition and assists in basic repairs of equipment.
JOB RESPONSABILITIES :
Responsible for general grounds maintenance across the property of the SCDJJ such as mowing, trimming, and blowing off of hard surfaces.
Responsible for planting, pruning and caring for ornamental plants on site.
Ensures that high traffic areas around SCDJJ are maintained with focus on ornamental plants that work best for each facility.
Makes recommendations regarding necessary work projects within areas assigned and assists with that work.
Confers with staff and supervisors to coordinate repair activities.
Responsible for all trash removal in assigned area.
Performs other related job duties as required by the Building / Grounds Supervisor and Horticultural Manager.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
A high school diploma and custodial or groundskeeping experience directly related to the area of employment.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
Knowledge of maintaining grounds; including but not limited to trimming of shrubs, bushes and trees, as well as grounds maintenance equipment / repair.
Good oral communication skills a must.
This position will work under the general supervision of the Building / Grounds Supervisor.
Work reviewed by supervisor on a daily basis with annually scheduled performance review.
This position will require extended work hours as workload dictates.
This position will require bending stooping, climbing ladders, squatting, and lifting of 40 pounds or more unassisted regularly.
Must maintain a valid SC Driver's license.
This position will require working in adverse weather conditions and will respond to emergencies as needed.
Must be able to work in a secured facility, around incarcerated youth.
This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
Proof of highest level of education will be required if selected for this position.

High school diploma and at least 5 years of related experience (Horticulture, Groundskeeping, Landscaping). Must hold a valid SC Driver's License and be 21 years of age.
