What are the responsibilities and job description for the District 4 Transportation Engineering Summer Intern (12508401) position at State of South Carolina?
This posting will be used to fill multiple summer internship positions in the Department of Transportation District Four offices located in Cherokee, Chester, Chesterfield, Fairfield, Lancaster, Union and York counties. Assists in engineering activities in the Maintenance, Construction, Bridge and/or Traffic Engineering fields. Responsibilities may include assisting with:
Maintenance: Conducts inspections on contractors mowing, grinding vegetation, installing traffic markings, etc. Works directly with crews to obtain quantities for drainage, paving, and bridge repairs. Works with permit technician on driveway and utility permits. Inspects placement of pavement markings.
Construction: Assists certified engineering technicians in performing inspection of contractors’ work to ensure that materials and workmanship are all in accordance with plans and specifications. This includes asphalt, bridge, paving, earthwork, and concrete work.
Bridge: Inspects timber components for decay, splits, bearing, etc. Inspects concrete components for spalls, delamination, etc. Inspects steel components for corrosion, section loss, cracks, etc. Reviews previous bridge reports before an inspection. Works directly with crews to perform bridge maintenance activities including: establishing grade for pile caps and pile cut offs, placing/screeding concrete, tying reinforcing steel, cutting lumber, sanding/grinding steel beams/bearings/rebar, drilling/anchoring concrete anchors to attach steel beams. Trains to make full penetration groove welds horizontal, vertical and overhead.
Traffic: Conducts traffic studies including: installing equipment, performing traffic counts, analyzing data. Performs CADD work by creating and revising traffic plans and detour routes. Learns traffic signal design with exposure from the beginning to end of projects.
Pay rate is between $17.00 - $23.00 per hours depending on qualifications.A high school diploma; and or an approved acceptable equivalence. Applicants must be accepted into or currently enrolled in a two-year college or university program in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management.
