This position will primarily telecommute but may be occasionally required to conduct field inspections and report to a central or regional office.
Responsibilities
- You will serve as a non-uniformed Deputy State Fire Marshal and review for approval, architectural and engineering drawings and specifications to ensure compliance with applicable codes, laws, and regulations.
- You will assist architects, engineers, government officials, and the public with code interpretations and enforcement duties.
- You will arrange and conduct conferences with government officials, design professionals, contractors, and owners to resolve code compliance problems.
- You may conduct or assist with field inspections related to the approval of plans and monitor projects during construction through field inspections.
- You will provide occasional training and review of work performed to assist with work quality, accuracy, and efficiency.
- You will provide technical assistance to other sections of the Office of State Fire Marshal and perform other duties, as needed or assigned, in support of State Fire’s mission.
Minimum Qualifications
- Engineer III: A bachelor's degree in Engineering and intermediate-level engineering work experience.
- Engineering Associate III: A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and intermediate-level engineering or construction management work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Registration in South Carolina as a "A" Professional Engineer, Engineer-In-Training, and/or Certified Fire Marshal.
- Certified as an ICC Fire Inspector I and Fire Plans Examiner
- Requires extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering as applied to building construction, planning, design, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of state laws, rules and regulations pertaining to construction and renovation of buildings.
- Ability to communicate complex design criteria to state and local code officials, and construction related professionals.
- Ability to interpret codes, laws and standards as applied to specific situations.
- Ability to successfully and effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
Other Requirements
- If not previously certified, must become certified as an ICC Fire Inspector I and Fire Plans Examiner within six (6) months.
- Position will primarily telecommute but will occasionally be required to conduct or assist with field inspections and report to a central or regional office.
- Occasional work outside of normal office hours, including holidays and weekends may be required.
- Occasional travel (local and overnight).
- Must have a valid driver's license and 10-year MVR that complies with State and Agency Fleet guidelines.
- Must be able to drive a state or personal vehicle to complete assigned job duties.

Salary : $60,000 - $85,000
