Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the Environmental Health and Safety Manager, the Fire & Life Safety Inspector conducts monthly inspections of campus buildings and fire safety equipment to ensure compliance with appropriate laws, regulations and standards; identifies hazards and deficiencies and takes corrective action as needed.
- Conducts monthly fire and life safety inspections for all campus buildings and equipment; confirms equipment is in working order and egress pathways are free of obstructions; and takes appropriate corrective action as needed.
- Removes and replaces fire extinguishers for service and / or maintenance.
- Creates written reports on all building inspections and maintains a written inventory of the university's fire extinguishers, including accurate equipment descriptions, locations and maintenance schedules.
- Communicates with campus building safety coordinators as needed.
- Serves as the primary contact for contractors performing annual fire extinguisher maintenance and monitors their work to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Serves as the contact for contractors providing services related to fire sprinkler systems, fire hoses, cafeteria fire suppression hoods and other fire safety equipment.
- Conducts periodic inspections and testing of other campus safety equipment, such as safety showers and eyewash stations.
- Stocks and maintains Facilities Management first aid kits; keeps an inventory of supplies and re-orders as necessary.
- Assists supervisor with universal waste management : Collects waste fluorescent lamps and used batteries from multiple campus locations and transports them to the universal waste storage area; packages and labels wastes for shipment per state regulations; and keeps storage area clean and organized.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
High school diploma; three years of experience in fire prevention, fire and life safety, or facilities maintenance; and valid driver's license.
Knowledge of the principles, best practices and techniques of fire prevention and safety. Ability to learn and ensure compliance with applicable fire and life safety standards and regulations, including National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, the International Fire Code and OSHA standards. Effective organizational skills. Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and work successfully with little supervision. Sufficient computer skills to perform job at a high level.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification as a Fire Inspector 1 (CFI) and applicable state license.
