What are the responsibilities and job description for the Grounds Specialist position at State of South Carolina?
Performs groundskeeping/lawn maintenance/landscaping/irrigation system duties to keep college owned grounds in an excellent condition. Duties include working independently with and without direct supervision on a regular basis. Applies landscape practices and workmanship for best practices to accomplish keeping grounds and independent garden feature beds and landscape features in a weed free and ideal condition at all times of the year. Perform ongoing landscape tasks as well as routine maintenance of all campus grounds and landscape equipment.
- Operates mowers, tractors, hand held equipment/tools associated with landscaping and grounds maintenance work activities. Functions as a skilled working technician to effectively utilize best practices and standards associated with proper upkeep of facilities and many different types of turfs and gardens owned by the college. Upkeep of all storm drains, ditches, and storm water drainage systems on the Giles campus.
- Performs professional landscaping and horticultural activities to include proper planting techniques for all plantings and maintenance of such, proper application procedures for fertilizers of different varieties and forms to provide ideal soil conditions, proper mulching applications for mulch beds, proper pruning skills and abilities to maintain growth and structure of trees and plantings of many different types and proper garden bed maintenance and upkeep on a consistent basis. Assist other technicians in and work alone to repair and maintain irrigations systems on all campuses.
- Performs preventative maintenance on college owned grounds equipment and turfs of different varieties in accordance with established procedures.
- Assists with guiding and training part-time and contracted personnel hired by the college.
- Independently applies herbicides and pesticides in accordance with labeling of products being applied for control and protection of personnel, students, plants, turf and trees on college owned property.
- Confers and interacts with coworkers, staff/faculty to resolve or improve all grounds related issues. Utilizes the College's work order system to maintain records according to policies and procedures of the department, and prepares report/accounts for daily work activities.
- Assists with maintaining irrigation systems at all campuses to include different types of main controllers, irrigation zone valves, rotor heads, spray heads of many different types and brands.
- Performs other duties as assigned by lead technician and/or supervisor such as upkeep of storage areas, working on lawn mowers and tractors and other grounds related equipment.
High school diploma and groundskeeping experience directly related to the area of employment.
High school diploma plus 3 years related work experience. Requires valid driver's license with good driving record. Existing knowledge of commercial irrigation systems is preferred.
Must be able to perform hands-on labor and capable of lifting weights up to 50 lbs. on a daily basis. Will be required to work occasional after-hours for special events. Interfaces daily with SCC personnel. Must be organized and work well with people and must work predominantly outdoors.
