Groundskeeping Lead

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Grounds/Custodial Services, the Groundskeeping Lead performs semi-skilled work in the maintenance and improvement of university grounds and directs the daily activities of a groundskeeping crew.

• Delegates, oversees and performs assigned duties, including mowing, edging, eliminating weeds/grass, trimming, maintaining flower beds, vine removal and other grounds-related tasks.
• Performs daily inspections and reports grounds issues, such as dead grass, tree damage, etc.
• Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment; informs supervisor when repairs are needed.
• Monitors materials and notifies supervisor of needed supplies.
• Assigns litter control areas to crew members and inspects each area every Friday afternoon to ensure the campus is neat and trash-free.
• Practices and instructs crew in safe use of equipment and chemicals and ensures crew members use university-provided safety equipment.
• Assists other crews with equipment and labor as needed. 

• High school diploma.
• One year of experience in commercial/institutional grounds maintenance.
• Valid driver’s license.
• General knowledge of the practice and procedures of grounds maintenance.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the general public.
• Ability to lead and effectively guide subordinates in daily tasks.
• Ability to perform manual labor and work outdoors in all types of weather.
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and operate all types of grounds maintenance equipment, including lawn mowers, weed eaters, backpack blowers, hand blowers, etc.

• Experience as a groundskeeping lead or supervisor.
• Valid pesticide license or ability to obtain after employment.

Travel/Overtime Requirements: Occasional after-hours and weekend work.
