In conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates small equipment such as dump trucks, snow plows and spreaders, forklifts (tool carriers), tractor with brooms, tractor with mowers <10’ wide, etc. Performs a variety of tasks for the Mowing Crew related to maintenance operations including, but not limited to, clearing grass and small trees from the highway right-of-way, routine mowing, removing large trees from the right-of-way, cleaning bridge weep holes, hauling debris and traffic control signs, moving spoil materials away from sites, and removing trees, limbs, and weeds from around facilities and obstructions, etc. Assists other maintenance crews, as needed, with other maintenance operations to complete routine maintenance work and maintenance plans. Minimum business plan requirements include completing 6 cycles of primary route and 4 cycles of secondary route cutting during a mowing season, including cutting dirt roads twice a year, maintaining the maintenance shop yard, and 1 cycle of brush management cutting on all primary and secondary routes. Assists in the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in flagging traffic in work zones during roadway repair and mowing operations to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public, and equipment. Flags traffic using sign board and/or hand-held flags. Operates small engine equipment such as chain saws and weed eaters as needed. Performs duties using manual labor in maintenance operations as needed. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment and vehicles to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present to get maximum utilization of equipment. Conducts pre-trip and safety inspections on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Assists in tracking and recording daily work performed to supervisors, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilization, and quantity of materials used. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended 12-hour shifts. Operates both anti-icing and removal equipment (snow plows and sand and salt spreaders) during snow and ice response on highways and bridges. Performs other related duties as assigned.There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator ’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards.
