Operates medium equipment, such as tandem dump truck, belt loader, large roller > 4 tons, and skid steer loader for hauling equipment and materials such as: asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, trees and debris. Operates a motorized (street sweeper) to sweep and clean roads, snow plow and sand spreader during inclement weather. Assists in the operation of a backhoe in cleaning ditches and installing sideline and cross line pipes, loading of materials needed for maintenance operations, e.g. earth materials, clay, sand and aggregate and clearing fallen trees and debris from roadway and right-of-way. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered and hand tools in various phases of roadway maintenance (e.g. chain saw { tree removal}, shovel, bush axes, tamp, lute board, weed eaters, drills, wrenches, air compressor, etc). Performs manual labor in building catch basins, pouring concrete for curbs, sidewalk, and raised median, laying pipes for driveways and other drainage structures, repairing shoulders, clearing right-of-ways and repairing bridges. Assists in setting up and flagging traffic according to MUTCD Standards to control flow of traffic, protect workers, general public and equipment. Operates front end loader in the loading of materials needed for maintenance operations such as earth materials, clay, sand and aggregate. Performs, conducts and documents pre-operation preventive maintenance inspection on vehicle/equipment as outlined in equipment specifications. Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations. May be required to work extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Subject to be on-call during emergencies. Performs other related duties as assigned. Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
