Highway Maintenance Worker III - Crew Leader (61033683)

Operates medium and heavy equipment such as slope mowers and large batwing mowers in routine shoulder and brush management operations. Assumes foreman's duties and responsibilities during his absence.  Serves as a crew leader, to include supervising crew in routine mowing, brush management, and various other maintenance assignments.  Documents labor, equipment, and daily work accomplishments in the Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS).  Assists in instructing crew members daily in safety practices, including wearing of safety equipment, vehicle and mowing equipment safety, and placement of signs for establishing safe work zones according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual. Assists foreman with training new employees in operating tractors with large batwing mowers and slope mowers to be used in routine mowing and brush management operations. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations to include operating dump trucks with snow plow and spreader attachment or salt brine anti-icing equipment.  May include extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned. 
Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.


The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards.
