Supervises a crew of highway maintenance workers performing maintenance activities on roads and right of ways. Equipment used in these activities may include motor grader, belt loader, dump trucks, and backhoe. Supervises hauling of dirt from roadways being worked in ditching operations-include widening of shoulders and sloping of banks to improve site areas. Dirt (fill material) is often placed on right-of-way to widen narrow shoulders and improve safety. Complete daily work reports accurately, maintain daily time sheets, completes employee evaluations, and enforces the disciplinary action policy. Enter daily work reports, receive and sign off work orders using HMMS computer system. Handles On-Call as needed. Uses equipment as needed to handle work orders and requests for cleaning out pipes and ditches. Also, uses equipment as needed to back sloping and widening of shoulders as is required. Communicate with property owners adjacent to roadway being ditched and cleaned. Ensure proper maintenance and upkeep of equipment by operators. This may include the Athey belt loader, backhoe, motor grader, and dump trucks. Assist new operators on equipment used in operations. Must have a commercial driver’s license to train employees on equipment. Works with Resident Maintenance Engineer, Assistant Resident Maintenance Engineer and Resident Maintenance Foreman in scheduling county wide ditching operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.Three and one-half (3.5) years of related work experience. Relevant education may substitute for the experience requirement. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
