What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Specialist position at State of South Carolina?
Support student success and retention through high quality circulation, reference, and general assistance to faculty, staff, students, and community patrons in-person, over the phone, and electronically, as well as general library duties. In addition, manage and provide support for the many different aspects of library technology, including serving as the IT liaison, managing support tickets, basic troubleshooting, and creating support materials and providing basic training to library staff. This position also assists in collecting statistics, compiling reports and surveys, editing the library Libguides, as well as creating and updating publications, handouts, guides, tutorials, etc. and assisting with outreach promotion and events.
Provide quality circulation services and other general assistance to all patrons (students, faculty, staff, and community patrons) in-person, over the phone, and online. Manages the maintenance and upkeep of the library’s technology (computers, printers, etc.) by working with SCC IT’s department as the library liaison – managing helpdesk issues, and working with IT representatives over the phone or in person to maintain and troubleshoot technology. Also communicates technology issues to library staff. Keeps up-to-date on technology changes relevant to the library and conducts technology training for library staff as needed. Creates support and training materials/instructions for library staff and patrons as needed related to technology. 20%
Assist with creating library publications/materials, including maintaining library handouts at all campuses. Assist with library outreach activities. Assist in maintaining the library’s webpage, including Libguides. Assist with library tutorial upkeep and maintenance. 15%
Collect statistics (including daily statistics) and compile library reports, as well as assist with any library surveys and information gathering. Regular library reports include but are not limited to D2L tutorial quiz reports, D2L evaluation feedback reports, database usage report, website usage report, library instruction report, library patron export, etc. 15%
Assists with general library duties as needed and performs other duties as assigned. General library duties include but are not limited to shelf-reading, shelving, library opening/closing, inventory, photocopying, lost and found, etc. 5%
Excellent customer service skills and strong end-user technology skills, particularly with Microsoft Office programs, including Excel. Strong verbal and written communication skills to communicate with patrons, library staff, and other departments. In addition, strong organizational skills, self-motivation/initiative, attention to detail, team-oriented, flexibility/adaptability, good judgement and the ability to follow library policies and procedures.
Ability to work afternoon/nights/weekends as needed for coverage. Occasional travel to SCC's campuses required. Requires the ability to frequently move around the library assisting patrons. Other physical demands include moving book carts, compact shelving (manual), and moving books and materials weighing up to 25 lbs. from shelving from ½ ft. to 6 ft. high and transporting them around the library.
Bachelor's degree, especially in a related field. Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 programs and other end-user technology. Experience with Microsoft Excel, surveys, and Libguides. Experience compiling data/reports & creating promotional material (Canva).
