It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.

JOB PURPOSE:

Under general supervision, provides technical and paralegal services to attorneys assigned to the Office of General Counsel of the Department of Juvenile Justice with an emphasis on management and retention of as well as responding to requests for agency records.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages the processing of Freedom of Information Act requests and other records requests handled by the Office of General Counsel including requesting necessary records from agency records custodians, tracking and managing production deadlines, maintaining records request logs and records of each request, and ensuring that records requests are responded to in an efficient, timely, and confidential manner. 

Provides any other needed assistance to attorneys, the Senior Paralegal, and the Central Records Supervisor in handling Freedom of Information Act and other requests for agency records.

Utilizes Adobe Acrobat Pro or current technology resources to redact Personal Identifying Information (PII) and other information as applicable from documents before release to ensure it is removed as required under state and federal law. 

Assists the Central Records Supervisor in working with Agency personnel to ensure that Agency records with retention schedules that are stored off-site are handled and disposed of according to the appropriate guidelines.

Under general supervision, provides technical and paralegal services for attorneys assigned to the Office of General Counsel of the Department of Juvenile Justice. This includes providing assistance related to state and federal lawsuits, employee grievances/appeals, and employee discrimination complaints, both at the agency level and when filed with the State Division of Human Resources and SHAC/EEOC. This also includes gathering records and information in response to discovery requests and SHAC/EEOC requests for information and scheduling depositions of witnesses.

STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma and experience in providing administrative support for an attorney(s) or legal office. 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:


Knowledge of personal computers, word processing and Adobe Professional. 

Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in interpreting and applying policies and procedures. 

Knowledge of applicable terminology/research practices and relevant laws and regulations. 

Ability to effectively plan, organize, and prioritize tasks. 

Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the public and co-workers orally and in writing. 

This position is located in an office setting with hours of sitting.

Some communication and interaction internal and external with employees as required.

Ability to perform administrative tasks (i.e. copying, filing) in an office setting.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Will be required to travel, including overnight travel, on occasion.

Must be able to bend, stoop, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds on a daily basis.

Must be able to be both physically active and to work in an office setting for long periods.

This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice.  Training applicable to these duties will be provided. 

PREFERRED AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:


A high school diploma, a paralegal certificate, knowledge of automated records and information storage and retrieval systems, knowledge of and ability to apply records and information management principles and techniques, and knowledge of archival principles and holdings.

Salary : $38,985 - $72,134
