The S.C. Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is searching to fill a Special Agent position in our Counter Terrorism - Bomb unit. The ideal candidate would have a Class I law enforcement certification, successfully completed FBI’s Hazardous Devices School (HDS), and a strong desire for public service.
General Responsibility
Prepare and act to mitigate explosive-related threats by means of: training, equipment/materials maintenance, protective and proactive sweeps (canine, dive, and otherwise), threat assessments, render safe activities, disposals, post blast scene processing, thorough and accurate documentation, community and law enforcement training and engagement. Will additionally be available to assist in investigations, testify in court, and generally utilize skills and expertise to the benefit of the Bomb Squad, SLED, and the law enforcement / public safety mission as needed. Will maintain membership and perform duties in support of the Counterterrorism Dive Unit (CDU) and the SLED Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) team.

Specific Duties
- Canine Readiness: Provide care, nutritional and grooming needs to assigned SLED explosive detection canine on a daily basis. Regularly train canine to meet or exceed established minimum guidelines. At all times maintains health and readiness of explosive detection canine.
- Training: Complete, at a minimum, the recommended hours of training, established by NBSCAB and SLED, for bomb technicians, and divers respectively. Will regularly seek out and attend training that enhances the employee's safety, knowledge. skills, and ability as a bomb technician.
- Equipment and Materials Readiness: Will regularly check and test mission critical equipment to ensure a constant state of readiness. Will regularly practice safe handling, storage and inventory of explosives and other sensitive materials and equipment.
- Availability / Calls for Service: The employee will, unless otherwise arranged with the supervisor, be available to respond to a call for service at all hours. The employee will be responsible for answering their SLED-issued phone and respond within 30 minutes to a call for service. When requested, the employee will respond to explosive-related calls for service including actual or suspected Improvised Explosive Devices, Suspicious Packages, Bomb Threats, Military Ordnance, Explosive Disposals, Post Blast Investigations, White Powder/WMD. The employee will utilize best practices to mitigate the threat to public safety. When requested, the employee will respond to support SWAT operations, support CDU operations, and other necessary responses as determined by the Bomb Squad Commander or Bomb Squad Lieutenant. When requested, the employee will make themselves available to perform explosive sweeps and standby on-scene explosive threat mitigation at large events. VIP/dignitary visits, mass transit hubs and/or other vulnerable targets.
- Reporting/ Administrative: Prepare clear and comprehensive reports for assignments, incidents, activities, equipment maintenance, time management and other associated administrative tasks necessary for the functional accountability of Bomb Squad personnel.
- Community Engagement: Assist state, county, municipal and private entities in the development of emergency response plans and associated training for bomb threats, improvised explosive devices and general explosive threat awareness. Participate in community relations events, including tours, career days, scouts, demonstrations and other events as assigned.
- Must be a certified Class I law enforcement officer through the SC Criminal Justice Academy or currently be a certified law enforcement officer from another state or jurisdiction and be capable of achieving Class I certification through the SC Criminal Justice Academy.
- Must currently be certified as an FBI Hazardous Device School (HDS) Bomb Technician with at least 3 years of Bomb Technician experience. Equivalent or greater military Bomb Technician training (ie: Naval School EOD) may be considered.
- Must possess or be able to obtain an FBI security clearance.
- Must be or be able to become a certified SCUBA diver to at least the Master Diver Level and be able to operate underwater in low visibility conditions.
- Must be or become an explosive detection K9 handler by completing an explosive K9 handler course and be willing and able to maintain an explosive detection K9.
- This position will require strenuous physical activities on a regular basis.
- Potential candidates must pass a comprehensive physical exam and basic proficiencies in a Bomb Suit.
- Some overnight travel will be required.
- There will be a two-phase interview process. The initial interview will typically take place within one week of the job closing date.
- Bachelor's Degree
- Experience in bomb squad operations, render safe operations, post blast investigations, robotic operations, and explosive canine handler training preferred.
