Reporting to the Counseling Services Director, the Staff Counselor provides counseling services to students and helps develop and coordinate timely and relevant mental health programming for the campus community.
Travel/Overtime Requirements: Must be available by phone for emergency on-call rotation.
Annual Salary/Hiring Range: $45,022 (08/16-5/15 each year).

Reporting to the Counseling Services Director, the Staff Counselor provides counseling services to students and helps develop and coordinate timely and relevant mental health programming for the campus community.
- Provides direct clinical services, including ongoing individual or couples psychotherapy, group therapy and emergency/crisis intervention (same-day crisis and intake assessment).
- Maintains appropriate documentation of all clinical activities.
- Serves as Outreach Coordinator, ensuring campus-wide mental health programming is timely and relevant.
- Acts as liaison to campus offices, groups and organizations to continuously monitor the need for mental health programming and develop engaging, effective programs that help reduce stigma and foster a supportive environment for mental health.
- Participates in peer consultation and department staff meetings and offers informal supervision to graduate-level interns.
- Participates in consultation with psychiatric medication management provider, peers and other professionals about students of concern or mental health issues on campus.
- Master’s degree in counseling, counseling psychology, social work or closely related field.
- License to practice independently as an LPC, LISW-CP or LMFT in South Carolina or license-eligible within two years of hire date (arranging supervision is the licensee’s responsibility).
- Must have passed the required licensing exam for clinical practice before date of hire.
- Experience working with a diverse client population.
- Knowledge of psychological and college student development theory.
- Exceptional organizational skills.
- Ability to provide culturally competent, time-limited psychological services, including individual, couples and group psychotherapy.
- Ability to provide emergency coverage/crisis intervention; consultation to students, parents and faculty/staff; and quality supervision to counselor trainees.
- Ability to assess addiction and substance use disorders.
- Willingness to learn new programs and work collaboratively.
- Ability and willingness to write grants.
- Commitment to professional development and ability to maintain appropriate professional/ethical standards in all situations.
- Clinical counseling or social work experience in a higher education setting.
- Experience with web-based technology, including online counseling.
- Telemental health counselor credential.
- Clinical specialization in veterans, LGBTQ, neurodivergence, eating disorders and/or addictions.
- Experience developing, coordinating and executing outreach programs.
