Job Description

A positive attitude that is willing to learn and be self-motivated. While a degree is not required for this entry level position, having a technical degree in civil engineering technology, engineering/architectural drafting, and/or experience in transportation related construction or surveying is preferred, but not required.

All position responsibilities are tightly related to the SDDOT mission to efficiently provide a safe and effective public transportation system. These duties include, but are not limited to: - Inspect, test, and sample materials (Portland cement concrete, asphalt, gravel and soil) - Inspect roadways, concrete and asphalt paving, and structures (bridges, box culverts, pipe culverts, and installations) - Perform field surveys - Inspect temporary traffic controls through and around work zones - Inspect erosion and sediment control - Complete various records and reports.
This position has a typical 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, mid-November through March. Extended hours will generally occur during the construction season to be compliant with Federal Highway requirements. This may include some weekend hours from April through mid-November. Work assignments are frequently performed outside in all weather conditions and around highway traffic.
Knowledge Of
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- civil engineering techniques (preferred but not required);
- elementary physical, mechanical, and earth science principles (preferred but not required);
- various types of engineering survey equipment (preferred but not required).

- use a calculator and accurately perform basic mathematical functions.

- routinely reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Certifications are required within the first year of employment. Classes and training for certification requirements are provided through SDDOT.
- Certification in one or more materials testing areas (asphalt, concrete, gravel);
- Certification in one or more inspection areas;
- Valid driver's license.
Compensation
Qualifications of the successful applicant will determine the classification level assigned.

As a requirement for continued employment, you may need to secure further technical training and/or certifications related to this position and its responsibilities.
The total compensation of Hourly Wage State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Journey Transportation Technician is approximately $64,405.00 annually.
