The South Dakota Bureau of Information & Telecommunications (BIT)is hiring a Network Engineer or Network Professional for an onsite position in Pierre, South Dakota. This position requires being onsite and is not a remote or hybrid position. This is a Full-Time 40 Hour Weekly position. For more information on BIT - Telecommunications division, please visit
This position requires occasional travel within South Dakota, mostly day trips but may require overnight stays.

The Network Engineer / Network Professional position reviews, analyzes, and engineers effective, modern workplace technologies supporting our network systems. Employees partner with the Network and Enterprise Architects, division leadership, and Architecture and Service Delivery staff to modernize technology and drive efficiencies across a broad base of network technologies, including routers, backbone switches, edge switches, wireless networking, firewalls, management systems, log systems, and associated systems. The position will lead our installation, support, and management of the data center and backbone networks. The position evaluates proposed network hardware and software solutions to find opportunities for new or improved IT services. Other skill sets include network documentation, remote network management, and project management.
Pay rate and classification will depend on experience and qualifications.
If hired in as an IT7 - Network Engineer,the position will be a civil service salaried role, and primary duties may include provisioning of configuring, monitoring, managing, and reviewing the State's data center network, campus backbone network, education networks, and other wired and wireless networks. The incumbent will review requests for new technologies involving network systems, install and maintain equipment to include routers, switches, layer 3 switches, wireless access points, wireless controllers, network management tools, and firewalls. Project involvement will involve agency-wide projects and some statewide projects of moderate complexity and duration. Incumbent will interact with clients, agency contacts, and mission critical vendors to address client-reported issues and / or new requirements. Incumbent will monitor network service level agreements (SLA) and key performance indicators (KPI).
If hired in as an IT8 - Network Professional, the position is also salaried, but exempt from civil service. Duties in this classification will include those from the Network Engineer level; however, project complexity and oversight may change. Additional duties could include but not be limited to : performing root-cause analysis of Network system issues to prevent future occurrences, developing new technical strategies within network systems, performing in-depth data analysis identifying high utilization, brittle infrastructure, subscriber practices, and network trends as it relates to the backbone and core network infrastructure, and approving usage of new network technologies integrated within the state network infrastructure. Incumbent will also develop, propose, and promote new technologies, new technical and architectural strategies, processes, methods, and plans that address the interrelationships of systems to meet business challenges for diverse clients.
Licenses and Certifications : The incumbent must have a valid driver's license.
