Education and Experience : Education and Experience : Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school.

Overview

Summary : Under immediate supervision, performs behavior therapy specialist work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features : This is the working level class in the Behavior Therapy Specialist sub-series. An incumbent in this classification provides daily living care and behavioral support to individuals residing at the Harold Jordan Center or its assigned transitional home(s). An incumbent in this class may be assigned to workdays, nights, and weekends. This class differs from Behavior Therapy Specialist Supervisor in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for supervising Behavior Therapy Specialists on an assigned shift.

Responsibilities

1. Engages persons supported with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in daily living and recreational activities of persons supported; provides assistance with activities as needed.

2. Mentor persons supported by modeling appropriate behavior and encouraging them to also engage in appropriate behavior.

3. Monitors persons supported to identify their emotional status and needs and communicates the same to supervisors, professional counseling and behavioral staff, and co-workers.

4. Observes behavior of persons supported and reports behavioral changes and concerns to appropriate staff.

5. Implements Professional Crisis Management techniques as needed to de-escalate dangerous behavior and ensure safety of persons supported, other staff, and self.

6. Ensures that behavioral support plans, individual support plans, and health / treatment plans for all persons supported are followed.

7. Ensures that living and recreational environments of persons supported are clean and safe

8. Teaches independent living and work skills.

9. Ensures that persons supported have adequate supplies of clothing, linens, and items needed for personal hygiene.

10. Inventories personal property of individuals supported by documenting all new and discarded items.

11. Attends meetings to participate in development of individual support plans and to review progress of persons supported.

12. Attends trainings to learn how to best support each person receiving services, taking into account each individual's needs and preferences.

13. Completes documentation regarding activities and behavior of persons supported.

14. Performs physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and whole-body movement such as lifting, transferring, walking, and stooping while assisting with persons supported.
