Qualifications

Education and Experience : Minimum Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school, experience equivalent to eight years of full-time firefighting work and current certification accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress or the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications in all the following : Firefighter 2, Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, EMT advanced preferred must meet all Lead Firefighter qualifications.

Necessary Special Qualifications :

Applicants for this class must :

1. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

2. Be eligible to receive a favorable security clearance, as required by appropriate regulations.

3. Pass an NFPA 1582 Occupational Health physical examination in accordance with TIG OR DODM 6055.5 by a licensed physician so that physical condition is sufficient to perform all assigned duties.

4. Perform a physical fitness and agility examination to demonstrate that physical condition is sufficient to perform all assigned duties.

5. Within 1 year of employment obtain wildland 1 certification.

6. Within one (1) year of employment obtain certification NIMS 300 / 400 and EMT B.

Overview

Summary : Under general supervision, supervises others in performing firefighting duties of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features : This is the supervisory class in the Firefighter sub-series. An employee in this class may be assigned to work any shift in supervising and providing a full range of firefighting duties. Employees in this class are responsible for fighting fires at an Army National Guard base and will be required to work a 56-hour work week (24 or 48-hour shifts) or other incremental shift work to meet mission requirements as determined by management personnel. This class differs from Firefighter 2 in that an incumbent of the latter functions in a lead capacity. This class differs from Firefighter Manager in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for managing Fire and Emergency Services.

In addition :

  • The employee must be able to handle high stress situations.
  • The employee may be subjected to extreme temperatures while wearing fire protective ensemble that is

encapsulating and insulating and may be exposed to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological

infectious) and nonbiological and or heated gasses.

  • The employee may be required to climb ladders, operate from heights, walk or crawl in the dark along narrow and uneven surfaces, and operate in proximity to electrical power lines or other hazards, and may be exposed to situations to include hot, dark, and tightly enclosed spaces.
  • Incumbents of this class must be able to lift, carry, drag or pull up to 185 pounds and must be able to climb 6 or more flights of stairs while wearing PPE, carrying equipment and tools weighing an additional 40 pounds.
  • Responsibilities

    1. Supervises firefighting crews on wildland, facility and equipment fire responses in accordance with established policy and procedures. Supervises personnel during medical responses in accordance with established protocol; during rescue operations including vehicle extrication, confined space and high / low angle responses in accordance with established policy and procedures. Supervises crews during hazardous materials incident and during fire prevention duties as assigned on base facilities in accordance with established policies and NFPA standards. Supervises Fire Control Center, the routine building inspection and cleaning of fire station and personnel in fire station. Supervises assigned shift's scheduled training.

    2. Supervises personnel in inspections on tools, equipment and apparatus in accordance with established policies and NFPA standards. Supervises employees routing maintenance on tools, equipment, and apparatus in accordance with established policy and NFPA standards. Operates assigned Wildland, Rescue Firefighting and Structural apparatus in a non-emergency or emergency mode with emergency lights and sirens.

    3. Maintains required 90% critical, 80% non-critical training by attending all required training as outlined in the

    Fire Department annual training plan. Teaches classes as outlined in the Fire Department annual training plan not to exceed their level or training.

    4. Maintains payroll spreadsheet to ensure payable time, leave and overtime is accurate and balanced. Approves time to include payable time, leave, and overtime requests. Implements disciplinary actions, when necessary, in accordance with established Military department and State policies. Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports as assigned.

    5. Conducts employee's individual performance plan, interim and annual reviews, and coordinates the new employee orientation.

    6. Performs special assignments / projects as required by the supervisor.

    TN Driver Standards

    State of Tennessee positions that may involve driving responsibilities require candidates to meet the following minimum driver qualifications :

  • A valid driver's license
  • For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not have record of the following violations : driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, more than 4 moving violations.
