Job Title: Assistant State Veterinarian
Location: Taylorsville, Utah
Job Description:
The Animal Industry Division of the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food has six main programs:
1) Animal Health – Focuses on prevention and control of animal diseases, with special attention to diseases that can be transmitted to humans.
2) Meat and Poultry Inspection -- Assure wholesome products for consumers.
3) Livestock Inspection (brand registration and inspection) -- Offer protection to the livestock industry through law enforcement.
4) Fish Health -- Protecting fish health in the state and addressing concerns of fish food production and processing.
5) Elk Farming and Elk Hunting Parks – Regulating the domestic elk industry with an emphasis on protecting Utah's wild elk population.
6) Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories - Disease diagnosis and surveillance.

- Develops, directs, and/or evaluates programs.
- Coordinates and/or acts as a liaison between agency or program and other agencies, programs, organizations, suppliers, etc.
- Coordinates program activities, services, and/or program implementation with private providers, other governmental entities, program users, etc.
- Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
- Acts as a resource for management and staff; provides technical support within area of responsibility.
- Respond to reportable animal diseases and zoonotic diseases.
- Provide expertise, outreach, and education to producers, veterinarians, and other stakeholders.
- Supervise program staff.
- Help increase animal traceability.
- Inspect slaughter plants and perform dispositions on animals.
- Serve as the state veterinarian in absentia.
- Speak before a group of people.
- Work with all animal species humanely.
- Experience in large animal veterinary medicine
- A current Utah veterinary license and USDA Category II accreditation
- Experience in inspection of animals
- Knowledge of various disease control and eradication programs
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
- Must be licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture.
- Must be United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) certified.
- Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. working at great heights, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, being subject to possible physical attack, etc.
- The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, defending oneself and/or others against physical attack.
- valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA53-3-202(1)(a).
Salary : $44 - $70
