Job Title: Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor II
The Utah State Office of Rehabilitation (USOR) invites applications for the position of Assistive Technology (AT) Specialist. This role is integral to the Utah Center for Assistive Technology (UCAT), supporting Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) staff and other referral sources. The successful candidate will perform comprehensive AT evaluations, provide training and outreach, and deliver innovative solutions to meet mobility and accessibility needs, including but not limited to walkers, wheelchairs, scooters, adaptive driving equipment, vehicle modifications, and home accessibility solutions.
Principal Duties
The Assistive Technology Specialist performs the following tasks:
Conduct AT evaluations to assess client needs and recommend solutions utilizing current and emerging technologies.
Collaborate with VR Counselors, clients, and referral sources to identify and address AT needs.
Assist in soliciting and obtaining competitive bids for AT products and services.
Prepare detailed evaluation reports, including recommendations for AT solutions and their anticipated impact on client independence and employability.
Educate and train clients in the effective use of AT devices and solutions.
Travel statewide to perform evaluations, deliver outreach, and provide training to VR staff, referral sources, and allied professionals. Travel may involve the use of state vehicles and occasional overnight stays.
Coordinate and collaborate with state agencies, community organizations, and business partners to optimize service delivery.
Maintain accurate records and track client progress using an internal database system.
Assist with inventory management, including retrieving and reconditioning equipment as needed.
- Troubleshoot and provide technical instruction for UCAT equipment when necessary.
Design and implement mobility solutions, including adaptive vehicle and transportation modifications, tailored to individual client needs.
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in human services or a related field, with preference given to candidates with backgrounds in Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or Physical Therapy.
- Experience in providing direct services to individuals with disabilities.
- A valid driver’s license, as statewide travel is required.

- Expertise and experience with adaptive vehicle driving equipment and vehicle modifications.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Certification as an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP).
- Experience working directly with individuals with disabilities.
- Proficiency in delivering training and presentations to groups.
- Familiarity with current technologies and AT innovations.
- A proven ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external partners.
