Boiler/HVAC Specialists maintain and repair HVAC/Boiler equipment located in a correctional institution. Adheres to safety and security guidelines, policies and practices. Provide vocational training to inmates regarding the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler and HVAC systems. This job is subject to 24-hour availability.

This job is NOT public safety certified and does not require peace officer status or certification.

Health Insurance - Public Employee Health Program (PEHP):

3 medical plan options. Choose a Traditional or High Deductible Health Plan. There is an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those who have other medical insurance coverage.

5 dental plan options, with an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other dental insurance coverage.

4 vision plan options under EyeMed or OptiCare

Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS):

Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.

Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System. 

  • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))

  • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.  

Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.

Paid Time Off:
Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).

Annual leave amounts increase with years of service. 

We have 12 paid holidays.


  • Operates and maintains high and low pressure steam, electric and other types of boilers.
  • Teaches others the principles and techniques used in the specific service or trade, adherence to industry and/or safety standards and maintenance of related equipment, tools and/or supplies.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems, makes adjustments, repairs and/or performs preventative maintenance on computers, vehicles, equipment, or machinery, etc.
  • Evacuates and recharges air conditioning systems.
  • Works in a team effort to help the maintenance or service operations become successful.
  • Coordinates activities with institutional needs.
  • Designs and/or prepares training/instructional materials, teaching aids and devices.
  • Uses and operates a variety of hand tools, electrical, mechanical, and automotive equipment.
  • Repairs, cleans, adjusts and/or performs preventive maintenance on computers, vehicles, equipment, tools, or machinery, etc.

  • The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Certified to handle coolants, refrigerants, and other like chemicals.
  • Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. working at great heights, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, being subject to possible physical attack, etc.
  • The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, defending oneself and/or others against physical attack.
