Title: Museum Technology Manager
Wage Range: $26.75-$37 hourly depending upon experience
Description: The Utah Historical Society is seeking an innovative and visionary leader to serve in the role of Museum Technology Manager for the forthcoming Museum of Utah. The person in this role will oversee the strategic and operational development, innovation, and maintenance of the technological landscape at the museum. Working across multiple teams within the museum and across the Utah Historical Society, this position will help ensure the museum remains relevant across a broad spectrum of digital, IT, and technology resources. The Museum of Utah will provide an excellent visitor experience for people in Utah, and the person in this role will be asked to achieve a high standard of success as they oversee development, maintenance, and care of IT assets for the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategy and Leadership
- Initiate and oversee strategic initiatives that integrate museum technology into the broader UHS Strategic Plan.
- Develop policies and procedures that ensure museum technology remains relevant to the broader goals of the organization.
- Coordinate with museum programs and UHS departments to ensure technological tools are available and adequately integrated into program planning, such as for temporary exhibits, museum programs, visitor services initiatives, etc.
- Serve as a technological advocate and advisor to UHS leadership to ensure programs remain relevant in a quickly shifting digital environment.
- Integration and exhibition support
- During various stages of exhibit fabrication, ensure that technology resources are leveraged and integrated into the physical and interpretive landscape of the museum.
- Maintain and update A/V and digital exhibitions at the museum.
- Collaborate with partners and outside vendors on exhibit maintenance, updates, and installation of new or updated exhibits.
- Coordinate with the Collections & Exhibition team to ensure the exhibits at the Museum of Utah are accessible to the public and in good working order.
- Visitor Experience and Operations
- In coordination with museum teams, ensure a robust visitor experience in all areas of visitor engagement.
- Oversee IT support for gift shop point of sale systems, engagement room, multi-purpose classroom, and back-of-house staffing.
- Plan and strategize for future technology needs in order to best serve visitors to the museum.
- Financial and Asset Management
- Maintain an inventory of museum IT and A/V assets.
- Oversee IT budget, and plan for updates to museum A/V and digital exhibits.
- Track and report technology project needs and progress to UHS leadership.
- IT Oversight
- Coordinate with designated staff within the Department of Cultural and Community Engagement, Department of Technology Services, and the Capitol Preservation Board to ensure IT needs for the museum and for museum staff are met.
- Oversee IT support for museum staff and partners that impact service to visitors.
- Plan and oversee procurement, installation, and maintenance for all major initiatives that include significant hardware, software, or communications systems.
Additional Responsibilities
- Some evening or weekend working hours may be required to support the public initiatives of the Utah Historical Society.
- Broad support or participation in the strategic direction of the UHS.
- Collaboration with community partners or internal stakeholders on special projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate/Qualifications
The successful candidate will be a self-driven leader and someone with significant knowledge of the field of information technology. Ideal qualifications include:
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in managing or overseeing technology in a museum or cultural sector setting, including but not limited to exhibitions, interactive displays, and museum operations.
- Demonstrated career growth and progressive responsibilities in managing IT systems and assets.
- Demonstrated project management experience, with a strong history of leadership and collaboration
- Demonstrated knowledge of museum exhibition or digital interactive design and development.
- Excellent oral communication and presentation skills; demonstrated written communication skills.
- Experience and background in public institutions is a plus.
Location: Hybrid; 3760 S. Highland Drive. Offices will be located at the Museum of Utah following the spring/summer of 2026.
