What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Facilitator position at State of Utah?
The Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) program with the Utah National Guard is seeking enthusiastic Recreation Facilitators with a strong work ethic to join our seasonal Civilian Groups' recreation staff. We strive to be leaders in helping participants conquer new heights, make lasting memories, and build a foundation of leadership centered around military skills, physical fitness, and recreation.
MWR facilitators work on a seasonal (March- September, Working Thursday - Sunday), part-time basis instructing our Civilian Groups through our various recreation programs on Camp Williams. Our facilitators help to create an environment that is exciting, playful, and safe. Applicants must be at least 18 years old to apply. Training will be provided.
Hired candidates need to be available for mandatory training from March 24th through the 28th.
As a Facilitator at Camp Williams, you will:
- Create a fun and exciting environment for participants to explore the vertical world of rappelling.
- Teach survival skills classes and lead through activities.
- Teach small groups a Land Navigation course and lead through a course.
- Teach large groups to flag etiquette.
- Facilitate large groups through our Leadership Reaction Course.
- Facilitate groups through our Physical Fitness and Teambuilding for Youth program.
- Conduct safety briefs before each program.
- Parent, chaperone, and group leadership interaction before and after camp.
- Help with setup and breakdown of activities each day, including gear logs, storage, and inventory.
- Provide a positive customer service experience for all Campers, chaperones, and leaders.
- Ability to command respect, enforce safe climbing practices, recognize unsafe conditions, and discuss any concerns with fellow staff and participants in a professional manner.
- Enforce MWR policies in a friendly, patient, and respectful manner.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for these positions has:
- Basic knowledge of rappel/climbing skills, safety, and gear (1-year climbing experience Preferred).
- Certification in a single pitch, challenge course, or climbing instructor is also desired but not required.
- The ability to work with a large group of kids, teenagers, and adults
- Experience coaching, programming, and facilitating is preferred, but not required
- Experience working with children is preferred, but not required
- The ability to command respect, enforce safe climbing practices, recognize unsafe conditions, and discuss any concerns with fellow facilitators and campers in a professional manner
- Valid certification in First Aid/CPR is preferred, but not required

Environmental and Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Incumbents must be:
- Comfortable working in a loud, outside, unsheltered environment.
- Comfortable speaking in front of and providing instruction to large groups.
- Comfortable working at height from atop the climbing tower.
- Able to continuously stand and walk on unstable and uneven surfaces for long periods.
- Able to repeatedly lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs of weight regularly.
- Able to balance, kneel, pull, push, and grasp objects as needed.
- Have the visual acuity to assess details such as harness buckles, knots, helmet straps, etc.
Salary : $17 - $22
