Job Description:
The Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Law Enforcement is seeking a Patrol Sergeant to help lead and support a newly established agency. This role is essential in overseeing daily patrol operations, supervising Natural Resource Officers, and ensuring the consistent enforcement of boating, off-highway vehicle (OHV), and sovereign lands regulations. As a Sergeant, you will patrol by truck, vessel, OHV, and snowmobile across some of Utah’s most scenic landscapes while engaging with the public, law enforcement partners, and recreational users. - Law Enforcement & Patrol: Perform investigations, routine patrols, and enforcement activities on lakes, rivers, trails, and sovereign lands.
- Supervision & Leadership: Directly supervise Natural Resource Officers, provide training, and ensure consistent enforcement practices.
- Patrol Coordination: Develop and maintain effective patrol coverage while working collaboratively with federal, state, and county law enforcement partners.
- Administrative Duties: Maintain detailed records, prepare reports, oversee personnel management, and assist with agency planning.
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- POST Certification: Must be a certified peace officer in the state of Utah or eligible for reciprocity.
- Valid Utah Driver’s License: Required for vehicle operations.
- Residency Requirement: Must reside within 50 road miles of the assigned regional office.
- Law Enforcement Experience: Minimum of 3 years of Natural Resource Law Enforcement experience.
- Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks to achieve operational goals.
- Expert OHV & Vessel Operation: Master-level skills in operating off-highway vehicles and watercraft.
- Knowledge of Utah Laws & Policies: Strong understanding of state laws, rules, and department policies governing boating, OHVs, and natural resources.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master Officer Certification: Preferred level of POST certification.
- Experience in Training & Outreach: Ability to conduct public education programs and field training for new officers.
Special Working Conditions:
- Required to respond to emergency call-outs outside of standard hours.
- Must be comfortable working in severe weather conditions and rough terrain.
- Extensive statewide travel required.
- Will be required to operate snowmobiles, ATVs, and motorboats in various environmental conditions.
- Take-home patrol vehicle available if within reasonable response time of patrol area.
