Overview

The Agency of Transportation is hiring two Technical Apprentices to assist with traffic data collection. These are part-time opportunities that offer a flexible schedule.

This role involves driving a state-owned vehicle for up to seven hours a day to various locations across Vermont to set up automatic traffic counters and install road tubes. Map reading skills are essential, as well as attention to detail for data entry, downloading, and quality checks. On occasion, the position may require assisting with the installation of in-road traffic sensors, which involves some manual labor.

This role is ideal for candidates that are looking to gain hands-on experience in transportation and data collection while working outdoors. The schedule is 7am to 3 : 30pm, Monday through Friday, but can be flexible for candidates. The position will work from May to the end of October, but candidates with more limited availability are welcomed. Starting salary may be negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Who May Apply

This position, AOT Technical Apprentice III (Job Requisition #52156) , is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. May be required on occasion to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded and / or steep terrain, or travel in boats. Field work may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards and construction sites during all weather conditions. Duties may require exposure to extreme weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of full-time college coursework in science, engineering, environmental studies, or related technical field.

High school diploma or equivalent AND one (1) year performing engineering / technical support tasks.

Two (2) seasons working as an AOT Technical Apprentice II with the State of Vermont.

Special Requirements

Current, valid driver's license required, and transportation may be required for field assignments.
