Overview

The Agency of Transportation (AOT) has an exciting opportunity in the Construction & Materials Bureau for a Laboratory Apprentice. The position will be responsible for logging samples into the computer system and prepping, testing, and reporting test data. The Lab Apprentice duties will also include assisting the Lab Technician with other related duties and may include use of a state-owned fleet vehicle to pick up aggregate samples from projects or aggregate sources and delivering them to one of the three State labs.

This position is based in Colchester, VT and offers flexible start and end dates, with potential for working through December. Ideally, the candidate will work 40 hours per week with some occasional overtime, but the schedule allows for some flexibility.

The ideal candidate will be reliable, motivated, able to work autonomously, and have strong verbal and written communication skills. This is a great opportunity for college students, or someone looking for seasonal employment. intern, internship

Who May Apply

This position, AOT Technical Apprentice IV - Construction Materials Lab (Job Requisition #52319), is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in both an office and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards and construction sites during all weather conditions, and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Class incumbents may be required to carry equipment, weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough wooded and steep terrain, travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree or 60 college credits in civil engineering, environmental technology, engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, or architecture.
OR
High School diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years of experience performing engineering supporting tasks involved in one (1) or more of the following: planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research and statistics, testing, investigation, maintenance or construction of various types of civil engineering projects.
OR
Three (3) seasons of working as an AOT Technical Apprentice III with the State of Vermont.

Special Requirements

Current, valid driver’s license required, and transportation may be required for field assignments.
