The Corrections Division of the Washington State Attorney General's Office seeks an attorney with significant management and legal experience to lead the Corrections Division.


With a team of 18 attorneys and 19 professional staff based in Olympia and Spokane, the Corrections Division provides a range of legal services to the second largest agency in Washington state government, the Department of Corrections. The division also advises and represents the Indeterminate Sentence Review Board (ISRB), the Governor’s Clemency & Pardons Board, and the Governor’s Office with respect to interstate extraditions. The work includes defending the lawfulness of criminal convictions and sentences in habeas corpus, personal restraint, and post-sentence review proceedings. The division also provides legal advice and defends and represents the state in litigation concerning prison operations and other aspects of the state corrections system. This can include federal civil rights litigation, class action system reform cases, and Public Records Act matters. The work is challenging, important and highly valued by our clients. Our attorneys appear in state and federal courts at all levels.

Duties

The Division Chief is responsible for the overall management of the division and ensures the delivery of high-quality legal services to its clients. The Division Chief also serves as the primary legal advisor to Department of Corrections leadership and, in that capacity, may serve as an adjunct member of the Department’s executive management team. The Division Chief is a member of the Attorney General’s Leadership Team and is responsible for contributing to and supporting the overall mission of the Attorney General’s Office.

In addition to meeting the qualifications to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, the successful candidate will also have demonstrated abilities and experience in the following areas:
  • Experience in substantive areas of law relevant to the division’s areas of practice;
  • The ability to build and maintain strong client relationships, including with client agency executive leadership;
  • Experience in civil litigation, client advice, appellate practice, and other areas of law relevant to government practice and operations;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and competence in mentoring and supervising attorneys and professional staff;
  • The ability to develop and carry out systemic approaches to litigation matters as well as organizational and budget issues;
  • The ability to coordinate and manage multiple issues and priorities of a diverse legal nature and differing complexity;
  • Experience developing practical solutions, facilitating issue resolution, implementing proactive and creative problem solving, and maintaining perspective and resilience;
  • Experience managing attorneys and professional staff, with the demonstrated ability to build respect and trust by fostering teamwork as well as by providing timely recognition and constructive feedback;
  • The ability to build, maintain and promote a working environment that is collaborative, diverse, inclusive, and innovative;
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written);
  • Interest in a fast paced and diverse work experience including both providing direct legal services and supervising a dynamic and hard-working group of attorneys and professional staff; and
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.

Applicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state. (Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered.) Supplemental Information

Salary range for this position is $164,846 - $170,316. Division Chief salaries are based on experience, qualifications and are commensurate with comparable positions in the AGO. This position is exempt from representation by the Association of Washington Assistant Attorneys General/Washington Federation of State Employees AFSCME Council28, AFL-CIO. A competitive state benefits package is also offered which includes a choice of medical/dental insurance plans, retirement, life and basic long-term disability insurance.
