Embrace this role to identify marked adults and collect tags/marks for bio sampling.
This is an opportunity to learn how to incubate eggs using a variety of vessels including, shallow troughs, isolation buckets, upwelling incubators, and vertical trays.
You are excited to learn about the work performed at hatcheries across Washington state.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will:
Fish Culture.
- Feeds fish according to pond populations and weight samples. Adjust feed size and amount fed as directed.
- Monitors egg and fish production and disinfects and enumerates eggs.
- Assists in identifying, sorting, and sampling species for spawning and adult distribution.
- Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
- Assist in inventorying and grading fish populations, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants.
- Picks eggs loss by hand or using equipment and incubates for facility programs or shipments.
- Collects adult fish by hook and line, seining, and volunteer or non-volunteer fish trap.
Operation and Maintenance of Facility and Equipment.
- Maintains proper water flow and rearing environments as directed.
- Actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate.
- Perform maintenance duties in and around hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment as directed.
- Applies herbicides or controlled burning for weed control as directed.
- Maintain road access to residences, hatchery by plowing, grading, and snow blowers.
- Service and maintain small gas engines and hatchery related equipment or structures.
Record Keeping and Reporting.
- Proficient use of computers and software in order to perform various aspects of hatchery work.
- Record daily fed, mortalities in rearing units, water temperatures, and other hatchery-related data.
- Reports changes in fish behavior and rearing environments to supervisors.
Working Conditions:
Work setting: This position will work outside in all weather conditions. At times will repetitively lift at least 50 pounds. This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.
Schedule: Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. May work 10 days on, 4 days off based on workload.
Travel requirements: Travel as needed to meet work demands.
Customer Interactions: Communicate effectively with the public and volunteers. Interact with small community groups and individual constituents on a regular basis.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
License: Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:
- Six (6) months of experience working at a fish hatchery.
