Envision yourself in the field, collecting fish that prey on juvenile salmonids along with biological data, operating PIT tag scanners, and compiling and ensuring data accuracy on Northern Pikeminnow and other fish species.
Additionally, you will support field implementation of the Northern Pikeminnow Management Program operations through managing mobile Sort-Reward Fishery registration stations throughout the season.
What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Northern Pikeminnow Technician will,
Set up and staff mobile field registration stations as part of implementation of the Northern Pikeminnow Sport-Reward Fishery Program:
- Fill out angler registration forms and payment vouchers. Examine Northern Pikeminnow to enumerate and determine eligibility.
- Examine all Northern Pikeminnow for spaghetti or other external tags.
- Collect angler exit creel survey data to record angler creel data and record biological data from Northern Pikeminnow.
- Collect and record creel and biological data all other fishes caught or kept.
- Summarize, compile and file daily angler creel data by registration station.
- Responsible for data accuracy, completeness, and quality.
- Organizes field vehicle and/or office, and stocks/maintain appropriate supplies for field operations.
Individually scan all eligible Northern Pikeminnow for passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags, using PIT tag reader for recovery of PIT tags from tagged Northern Pikeminnow or consumed juvenile salmonids:
- Accurately collect and record PIT tag data, issues tag vouchers and proofs data folders for tag voucher carbons and summarizes all tag recoveries.
Inform the public and provide general information about participation in the Northern Pikeminnow Sport-Reward Fishery:
- Explain and describes relevant angling regulations, fishing techniques, when, where, and how to catch Northern Pikeminnow.
- Provide year-to-date harvest and effort totals by registration station as well as historical peak harvest information.
Working Conditions:
Work setting, including hazards:
- Work is primarily conducted in the field, alone and may be during inclement weather conditions.
- May encounter noise, odors, repetitive movements of hands, finger manipulations, long periods of sitting, standing and walking, for angler interviews.
- Carry, kneel and heavy lifting (up to 40 lbs. unassisted) of containers of fish.
- Encounter biting and stinging insects, use of knives and may transport agency staff and equipment in agency vehicles.
Schedule: 24/7 non-scheduled. Typically, 8 - 10 hours per day between 5:00 A.M.- 11:00 P.M. 40 hours per week. Weekend and evening work is required.
Travel Requirements: Driving required between office and field registration stations as well as between registration stations.
Tools and Equipment: Cargo vans, pickup trucks, ice chests, passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag scanners, knives, iPad, electronic accessories, Scissors, measuring board, tally counter, totes/bins, paper forms, labels, scale cards, office supplies, WDFW apparel including gloves, and hat, and copies of current employee manual.
Customer Interactions: Interacts primarily with recreational anglers and the public daily for fisheries data collection, providing basic information regarding fisheries resources, agency programs and activities and sport fishing regulatory information to the public. Works with co-workers at start and end of shift. May include interactions with individuals experiencing anger, distress, or frustration. Liaison with regional supervisor and enforcement on fishery violations observed in the field.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Option 1: Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
Option 2: Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural science classes.
Certifications/Licenses:
Valid Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:
- Experience identifying Northern Pikeminnow and other Columbia River fish species, including juvenile salmonids.
- Knowledge of biology and life history of Northern Pikeminnow and other Columbia River fishes.
- Familiarity with recreational angling gear and methods.
