The Department of Natural Resources, Northeast Region is looking for a Timber Sales Forester to join our North Columbia unit. This position, under the supervision of the Unit forester, will have regular interaction with foresters, forest engineers, other natural resource professionals, other agency/organization members, and the general public. Position responsibilities within the Presales program will include performing as a lead forester on timber sales and timber sale contract compliance including regeneration, and other silvicultural practices with a harvest level of approximately 18MMBF per year. This position may also support the fire suppression program during peak workloads.

Qualifications

This may be filled as an in-training position. This is designated as a 12-24 month training plan. If you complete all elements of the training steps in a shorter amount of time, we may waive the remainder of the time required. Candidates will be considered as Natural Resource Specialist 1 (In-Training) or Natural Resource Specialist 2 (NRS2), depending on qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
Natural Resource Specialist 1 (In-Training)
(Salary range: $3,811 - $5,117 per month):

  • AA degree in Forestry or Natural Resource related field of study; OR a combination of education and/or experience equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of forest management objectives, timber management objectives, and silvicultural practices.
  • Knowledge of GPS equipment and ESRI GIS program to map unit boundaries and road layouts.
  • Knowledge of contracting procedures.
  • Knowledge of logging and forest road layout.
  • Experience working independently or as part of a team on assigned tasks, and adapting to changing needs.
  • Shown ability to work independently or as part of a team on assigned tasks, and adapt to changing needs.

Natural Resource Specialist 2

(Salary range: $4,299 - $5,783 per month):

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry or Natural Resource related field of study; OR a combination of education and experience equivalent.
  • Experience with forest management objectives, timber management objectives, and silvicultural practices.
  • Experience with GPS equipment and ESRI GIS program to map unit boundaries and road layouts.
  • Experience with contracting procedures.
  • Logging and forest road layout experience.
  • Proven experience in computer applications such as Arc GIS, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Shown ability to work independently or as part of a team on assigned tasks, and adapt to changing needs.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:

  • The position's assigned duty station is the North Columbia work center in Colville, WA. The large majority (80%) of work is performed in isolated unimproved natural areas. Sometimes the incumbent may work alone. The remaining (20%) work is performed in an office or training environment. The incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions. The person in this position must be able to meet in person with the ARM, Management Forester, District Engineer, District Manager, Supervisor, and District staff.
  • The position requires a large amount of time in the field traveling alone between timber sales, contract administration sites, fires, and work centers. On occasion, travel throughout the region, other regions, or Olympia for meetings, temporary assignments, and training sessions may be required.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
