Work Hour flexibility may be available and considered
Salary: $3,393.00 - $4,517.00 Monthly

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our South Puget Sound Region. Are you someone who loves the outdoors and is passionate about improving recreation opportunities for the public? DNR is hiring for a Recreation Crew Member in the Snoqualmie Unit recreation development and maintenance team. This position predominately works alongside other Recreation Crew Members and under the direction of the Recreation Crew Lead to construct new trails, bridges and other facilities. You will also occasionally assist on the maintenance of existing trails and structures. DNR manages multiple trail systems in the area with user groups ranging from Hiking, Mountain biking, Paragliding, Rock-climbing and Equestrian use.

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Use knowledge of sustainable trail building standards to construct and maintain trails on DNR land.
  • Construct and maintain pedestrian crossing trail bridges.
  • Safely operate and maintain mini excavator, powered toter, chainsaw, rigging, and other power tools for the use of trail and facility construction and maintenance.
  • Coordinate, lead and monitor recreation projects with the Washington Conservation Corps crew and other partners/volunteers.
  • Interact with the public and represent the agency in a positive manner.
  • Drive a work truck and trailer on forest roads.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:


  • High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Experience maintaining and operating power tools such as chainsaws, brush cutters, and tracked wheelbarrows.
  • 1 year minimum experience using hand tools to do laboring or construction-related activities.
  • 6 months experience leading a crew or working with volunteers.
  • Experience gathering data, using GPS and GIS technology, and writing reports using Microsoft Office products, or similar.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques for developing and maintaining recreation trails and facilities.
  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of recreation management and how public involvement fits within the landscape.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with a diverse group of people.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Incumbent must be able to traverse steep, uneven terrain in all weather conditions. The position will require operating a four-wheel drive vehicle on highway and forest roads, as well as trail hiking, operation of light equipment, and riding mountain bicycles on trails of moderate to difficult terrain. The position will regularly be required to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Local travel within the Snoqualmie Unit, with occasional travel to other parts of the South Puget Sound Region.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
  • At least 4 years of driving experience.
  • At least 2 years of natural resource-related labor experience, such as trail maintenance, or recreation maintenance.
  • At least 1 year of experience operating grip hoist cable systems and mini excavators or similar equipment.
  • Understanding of current recreation management plans and associated agency policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Knowledge of: DNR and USFS trail design standards; maintenance standards and various maintenance activities associated with recreation facilities, including trails, trailheads, and day-use facilities; and methods and practices of construction activities.
  • Strong outdoor skills, as well as mountain bike riding skills, and motorized ORV riding skills.
  • Wilderness Medical Training (WFR, WAFA, WFA).
  • Must be able to read maps and use a GPS to navigate forest roads and trails.
  • Previous experience performing trail work, including maintenance and building new trails and trail bridges.
  • Previous experience leading, assigning, and complying work to crews, volunteers with various skills, and contractors.
