Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor 4

Are you a leader with a passion for assisting students, youth, and adults with disabilities by providing vocational rehabilitation services to assist them in obtaining and maintaining employment?

We are seeking motivated people committed to providing vocational rehabilitation services to clients with disabilities. In this role, you will support our DVR field offices as a lead/float and assist with coverage that is needed across the region.

This opportunity will be flexible / hybrid, meaning office attendance at the Aberdeen duty station will be required to successfully complete this job.

Some of what you will do:

  • Provide vocational rehabilitation counseling and devise own work methods.
  • Develop an effective VR counseling relationship that is responsive and unique.
  • Determine customer eligibility for DVR services by obtaining and analyzing relevant information.
  • Provide support and guidance to customers.
  • Arrange and interpret results of diagnostic testing.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of client's needs.
  • Obtain benefit analysis reports and interpret the results.
  • Approve client Individualized plan for employment.
  • Manage and spend allotment of case service funds.
  • Use our Service Tracking and Reporting System.
  • Assess and support client progress.
  • Assist client and employer with post employment services.
  • Regularly assign, instruct, and check the work of others.
  • Function as a supervisor in their absence.
  • Provide orientation and basic training for new staff.
  • Arrange for office coverage.
  • Help develop agendas and office meetings.

Professionals with the following should apply:
Four years of paid experience* as a vocational rehabilitation counselor or similar paid experience in vocational counseling, job placement, vocational assessment, or other areas of rehabilitation counseling. This experience may be gained either before or after obtaining the qualifying education or CRCC certification.
  • One year of the paid experience may be substituted with unpaid experience consisting of:
  • Direct work with people with disabilities in a setting such as an independent living center; or
  • Direct service or advocacy activities that provide people with experience and skills in working with people with disabilities; or
  • Direct experience as an employer, as a small business owner or operator, or in self-employment, or other experience in human resources, recruitment, or experience in supervising employees, training, or other activities that provide experience in integrated employment environments.
And, one of the following:
  • Current certification as a Rehabilitation Counselor by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC).
  • Or, a Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling, psychology, counseling, or a field related to vocational rehabilitation (such as one that promotes the physical, psychosocial, or vocational well-being of people with disabilities).
  • Or, a Master's degree with at least 18 quarter or 12 semester credit hours of rehabilitation counseling courses.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of DVR service delivery policies, procedures, and practices that result in successful employment outcomes for individuals with all types of disabilities.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership practices.
  • Knowledge of the expectations of employers who hire students with disabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities within prescribed timeframes.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and oral presentations.
  • Ability to use office computer technology, including MS Word, Outlook, internet browsers, and applications specific to DVR.
  • Ability to apply multiple counseling techniques to meet the varied needs of customers.
