The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Supervisor in Cle Elum, WA. As the Maintenance Supervisor this person plans, budgets, schedules, and supervises the work of one or more highway maintenance crews and has responsibility for maintenance of a specific section of highways; or may supervise one or more crews with a full-time area-wide assignment. This position will be required to interactive with the public, EMS, Washington State Patrol, and other responders in a professional manner, following policies and protocols set by the agency. In this role you will supervise the maintenance of state highways, roadside, infrastructure, and rights of way. You will also supervise crews performing a variety of highway and right of way maintenance work to ensure the safe, efficient movement of goods, services, and people in any and all-weather conditions. This may require working outside of the normal schedule including nights, weekends and holidays.
What to Expect
This person is required to supervise crews performing both winter and summer routine maintenance operations. This position is also responsible for their own safety and the safety of other crew members while performing maintenance work. By accomplishing assigned tasks, this person contributes to the ability of the public to travel safely and efficiently over state highways.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
- Plan and oversee an organizational unit within a defined maintenance budget.
- Identify needed maintenance work activities.
- Ensure an inclusive and safe work environment for WSDOT Staff.
- Promote and ensure compliance with all safety standards.
- Schedule and direct highway maintenance activities on the state highways and WSDOT properties and responsibilities in the Bullfrog Maintenance Section.
- Coordinate equipment and labor with SC Region Area 1 sections – Ellensburg, Bullfrog and Hyak.
- Maintain and submit daily records.
- Responsible for Inventory Control Point (ICP).
- Prepare and complete project general estimates.
- Investigate employee personal injury and equipment damage.
- Perform a wide variety of day-to-day'. maintenance operations work.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- Must have a Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction.
- Two (2) years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, Bridge Lead, Maintenance Mechanic 3, or equivalent combination of roadway maintenance experience.
- Comprehensive Knowledge of heavy equipment used in road maintenance with two (2) years' experiences proficiently operating 26,000 to 54,000 GVW dump trucks in the performance of routine highway maintenance and adverse weather conditions, as needed.
- Possession of a valid Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card with experience performing traffic control per M54- 44 or MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtain Flagger Certification within six (6) months.
- Respond to emergency call out situations from the WSDOT Central Washington TMC in a reasonable time frame, communicating and coordinating on scene with law enforcement, fire departments/medical aid, other local/state/federal agencies, and media.
- Experience providing excellent customer service.
- Experience in communicating effectively in both verbal and written form.
- Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
- Experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, and making good decisions under stressful conditions.
- Experience in working independently and prioritizing workload, with the ability to handle multiple assignments. Set an example with regular attendance and be prompt when reporting to work, daily.
- First Aid Certified within 6 months.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
- Two (2) years of experience operating a dump truck with plow, sander, and deicer/anti-icing system, & a front-end loader Knowledge of state highways, roadsides, and right of ways of the surrounding area.
- Understanding and experience dealing with public/private owned fleet & rental equipment.
