The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 In-Training position in Moses Lake. This position is responsible for effective communication both inside and outside the work group. Under the direction of a Maintenance Superintendent, Highway Maintenance Supervisor and/or Highway Maintenance Worker 3 and Maintenance Specialist 3, this journey-level position is a member of the regional maintenance organization. Operating a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, this position is responsible for maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures and performs a variety of highway maintenance, assists in sign installation, repair, and maintenance, or patrols designated state highway segments to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. This position performs a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Operate Class A and B heavy highway equipment to perform repairs and maintenance to highways and structures.
  • Make field layout and installs stop bars, pedestrian crossings and turn arrows with paint or thermos plastic materials.
  • Operate Class A and Class B highway equipment as designated on the approved Department of Transportation Equipment List for highway maintenance, earth, snow, and ice removal operations. May be required to operate Class C level equipment.
  • Assist in assembling, installing, and replacing signs, sign components, and signposts using a variety of equipment and tools such as hand diggers, portable power tools, pavement breakers, ladder trucks.
  • Design and set up traffic control for all operations.
  • Conduct moving and stationary traffic control operations using attenuator/buffer truck.


Qualifications

This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at the lower level (HMW1 depending on qualifications), providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.

To be considered for the HMW1 level, the following are required:

  • A Washington Class B CDL (Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions must be obtained within12 months of hire).
  • One (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, truck driving or heavy equipment operation, or equivalent experience in logging, farming, or excavation.
  • Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card (Required within 6 months).
  • Ability to maneuver and/or manipulate 60 pounds with or without equipment.

To be considered for the HMW2 level, the following are required:

  • Washington Class B CDL (Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions must be obtained within12 months of hire).
  • Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, truck driving or heavy equipment operation, or equivalent experience in logging, farming, or excavation.
  • Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card (Required within 6 months).
  • Ability to maneuver and/or manipulate 60 pounds with or without equipment.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High school diploma, or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Valid Washington State Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License.
  • Experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.


Important Notes

  • Must have the ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.   • This position is not eligible for remote work.
