The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a skilled Highway Maintenance Worker 2 to serve on the Pavement Marking Team in Seattle, WA. This position provides traffic control and highway maintenance support for all Northwest Region Pavement Marking crews and the Area 51 Sign crew. This position supports WSDOT’s mission by ensuring the safe and efficient movement of goods, services, and people throughout the region. This position is critical in fostering a respectful and healthy work environment with a focus on diversity, equity, and Inclusion.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:
  • Perform traffic control for Northwest Region Striping, Thermoplastic, Raised Pavement Markings, and Area 51 Sign crews.
  • Respond to work requests
  • Operate pickup trucks, Traffic Mounted Attenuators (TMA’s) with Variable Message Systems (VMS) and arrow boards for advanced warning in mobile traffic control operations.
  • Work with higher-level maintenance workers the installation and removal of crosswalks, stop bars, arrows, and various other markings using various hand tools.
  • Clears brush for sign visibility using weed eaters and loppers.
  • Perform daily equipment checks including performing minor repair on equipment and hand tools.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Two (2) years of highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or heavy equipment experience
OR
  • One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalent.

The following is required at all levels:
  • Valid Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with endorsement "N” and without air brakes restriction, with valid medical card.
  • The ability to transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • The ability to respond to emergency call outs, work different and/or extended shifts on short notice (days, nights and weekends), and perform standby duty.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station for an after-hours call.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, confined spaces, uneven terrain, and next to fast high volume highway traffic.
  • Ability to traverse steep, rough and uneven terrain; work at heights above 25ft over land or water; work in heat and around hot asphalt.
  • Ability to operate Class A, B, and C equipment w/current technology in highway maintenance operations.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card
  • Crane Certificate.

  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County and 10% Group C Assignment Pay.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
