We are excited to announce an open position and that we are now accepting applications for a Food Service Worker, Part-Time, here at the beautiful Spokane Veterans Home in Spokane, Washington!
- This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.
- Position(s) at this location will also receive 5% Premium Pay for 24/7 facilities. Employees must physically work at the facility 3 days per workweek to qualify. The 5% Premium Pay is in effect until June 29th, 2025.
Please note: Expected hours will be 3:30 pm to 8:00 pm Friday through Tuesday.

In addition, we provide critical community services through a variety of programs, and at our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star.
In this position, under the supervision of the Dietary Manager, this role will serve and prepare food in a safe and sanitary manner to ensure the nutritional needs of the residents are being met. Cultivate your culinary career and use your culinary skills to serve America's heroes by applying now!
Duties
Some of what you will be doing:
- Set up and serving steam tables, napkins, utensils, condiments, supplements, desserts and drinks.
- Set up and serve dining areas drinks, food orders and any other needs of resident following prescribed diets and food preferences.
- Clean up bussing tables, sanitizing tables, food carts, washes pots and pans and other related equipment.
- Performs simple cooking such as making toast, boiled eggs, hot cereal, wash peel chop vegetables and fruits, assembles sandwiches, salads, and desserts.
- Operates kitchen appliances such as coffee urn, toaster, mixer, dishwasher and other related work as required.
- General cleaning and sanitation of work areas are done on a continual basis as well as in the areas of food service department, dining rooms, food storage areas, tray assembly area, dish room, freezers, refrigerators, hallways, doors, walls, and all garbage areas including the removal of all garbage and all boxes. Sweeping and mopping floors.
- Taking out garbage. Cleaning and sanitation of food preparation equipment, utensils and dishware using dishwashing machine and approved three sink method and careful handling of equipment to avoid damage.
- Use of equipment to assure cross-contamination does not occur.
- Cleaning of dish room and equipment by following the cleaning list.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Must have a current Washington State Food Handler's Card.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of safe food handling practices and sanitation standards, good personal hygiene, safety precautions, care and use of kitchen utensils and equipment. Twelve (12) months experience in a food service setting.
Special Requirements:
- Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
- Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
- Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
- Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. and be capable of reaching a minimum of 36" using proper technique to stock shelves and access supplies. Employee must also be able to push or pull with sufficient strength and walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner during the entire workday.
- Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.
- Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
