The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Northeast Region, we are looking for a full-time permanent Assistant Fire Management Officer (Wildland Fire Management Specialist) to join our team in Okanogan County, Washington!
In this leadership role, you’ll oversee fire preparedness and suppression efforts, managing a team of 3 seasonal engine leaders and 9 seasonal firefighters. Your expertise will ensure our team is ready to respond to wildland fires and support our prescribed fire program. You will also collaborate on forest health treatments and build connections with our local community to enhance wildfire resilience.

- Wildland Fire Suppression - Provide supervision and oversite for staff in fire suppression at the unit level. Protects human life and natural resources on department protected lands while minimizing resource loss and fire costs. Suppression duties in the local unit can vary from acting as an initial attack Incident Commander (IC) to filling the role as a Heavy Equipment Boss.
- Wildland Fire Preparedness - Under the guidance of the Fire Management Officer plans and implements wildland fire training for seasonal crews and interagency cooperators. Instructs seasonal and permanent staff and private contractors as appropriate. Assists with developing the Unit’s annual preparedness review. Plans and provides drills and training exercises on a regular basis to the seasonal staff. Ensures safe working practices are followed and holds regular safety meetings and after-action reviews with the seasonal staff. Tracks crew training and ensures position task books are completed accurately.
- Supervision - Supervises 3 seasonal engine leaders and 9 seasonal firefighters in daily activities. This includes training, pre-suppression work projects, and fire regulatory duties. Responsible for assigning and directing seasonal positions in their work activities.
- Forest Health - Rx burn implementation support to include firing, holding, burn boss, etc., Leads and supervises crews to conduct various forest health related projects such as non-commercial thinning, slash abatement, and project layout in coordination with State Lands and Service Forestry staff.
- NWCG Qualified as a Single Resource Boss and Incident Commander Type 5.
- Supervisory experience.

- Must annually pass the work capacity test at the arduous level.
- Field and Office: Position’s assigned duty station is the South Okanogan - Omak Work Center. Work is performed in an office setting (30%) and alone in isolated unimproved natural areas within the unit (70%). Incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
- This position requires travel (50%) to the field for project work, fires, or supervision, attend meetings or various trainings. Frequent overnight travel is required for trainings, meetings, and fire assignments.
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- A bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Natural Resource Management or a closely related field.
- Task Force Leader (or higher) NWCG qualifications.
- Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2).
- Skills in evaluating others’ abilities and assessing training needs.
