Salary: $4,517.00 - $5,241.00 Monthly

Do you enjoy the challenge of wildland firefighting? Do you see yourself operating heavy equipment to fight fire across Washington’s most diverse geographic areas? The Department of Natural Resources is looking for bright, quick thinking individual to fill the role of Initial Attack Heavy Equipment Operator. This position will be based in the Olympia Area and will be a part of the one of the busiest fire units in the DNR’s South Puget Sound Region.Responsibilities:
  • Position will be responsible for the safe and effective operations of primarily a firefighting bulldozer, and use of transport trucks and trailers.   When not assigned to fires, heavy equipment operators will support fire leadership within the fire unit.  They will work as a line qualified firefighter, help with prescribed fire preparation and implementation, and assist with other forest resilience related work.
  • There may be potential to use or train on firefighting excavators.
  • We would like to see an individual who would like to work on advancing fireline qualifications as opportunities develop.
Required Qualifications: 
  • Two-years’ of experience operating dozers or excavators in a forested environment.
  • Two-years’ of documented experience operating Class A CDL rated transport equipment to include lowboy trailers, tilt bed trailers, tilt bed transport trucks, etc.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Position's assigned duty station is the Capitol Unit work center. The majority (85%) of work is in the field on wildfires or forest resiliency projects, requiring the ability to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions. The position must be able to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Day travel between wildfires, forest resiliency assignments and work center are frequent. Overnight travel for training and meetings may be required one to three times per a year.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years. 
  • Employee must possess a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tank vehicle endorsement to be able to drive equipment.
  • Must complete and pass IS-700 and ICS-100 courses.
  • Successful completion of Operator Safety Training including knowledge of standard fire orders, situations that shout watch out and LCES.
  • Must pass the work capacity test at the level required for all NWCG qualified positions. At a minimum, must be able to pass the moderate work capacity test.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Fully qualified in multiple NWCG Single Resource Boss positions and ICT4 and maintain that level of certification.
  • Ability in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, mobile navigation applications and Global Positioning technology.
  • Three years of documented experience in operating dozers in a forested environment with wildland fire experience.
  • Three years of documented experience operating excavators, skid steers and wood processing equipment in a forested environment.
  • Three years of documented experience operating Class A CDL rated transport equipment to include lowboy trailers, tilt bed trailers, tilt bed transport trucks, etc.
  • PM-310-1 rated Heavy Equipment Boss (HEQB).
  • Knowledge of:
    • Burn permit regulations
    • Fire regulatory and enforcement
    • Forest fire prevention
    • Fire investigation
    • Good writing and verbal communication skills
    • General forestry
    • Successful completion of S-236
