The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our State Land Survey Program for a Professional Land Surveyor to join our Land Surveyors and Technicians team. We utilize robotic total stations, modern multi-constellation GNSS receivers, and up-to-date office software to perform Cadastral, GLO/PLSS retracements, boundary staking, and topographic surveys on state-managed forest lands, natural areas, and recreation sites. DNR encourages and supports the continuing professional development of our Land Survey staff. This is a great opportunity for a licensed surveyor wanting to work in non-urban areas primarily in SW Washington with a small, but highly skilled work group.Responsibilities:
  • Supervising and directing two, two-person land survey crews, leading and mentoring them in researching survey and title information; recovering and maintaining original GLO corners; re-establishing lost GLO corners; establishing state property corners and lines in support of DNR land management activities; producing preliminary and final survey maps and legal descriptions; filing records of surveys and land corner records; producing topographic and as-built surveys
  • Work proactively with program, division, and region staff to construct an action plan for land survey projects based on program needs and agency priorities. Work with region points of contact and other region surveyors where available to prioritize and schedule projects. Keep points of contact up to date with estimated timelines and cost of projects and keep the land survey unit supervisor informed of plan changes.
  • Responsible for reconciling conflicting or ambiguous survey data, prioritizing work for multiple programs competing for a finite resource of survey time, planning crew configurations, and assigning and tracking the work of four employees.
Required Qualifications: 
  • Eight years of experience in Land Surveying
    OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Supervisory experience.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Must possess and maintain an active Washington Professional Land Surveyor’s License.
  • Approximately 75% office and 25% field.
  • Statewide travel, usually infrequent but with occasional extended periods (2 to 3 times per year) based on agency needs.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience driving on primitive or active logging roads.
  • Experience analyzing land and title records.
  • Knowledge and experience using ESRI GIS software.
  • Knowledge and experience using AutoCAD with land survey extensions such as Carlson Survey.
  • Knowledge and experience with modern survey instruments and GNSS receivers.
