The Department of Social and Health Services is looking for an engaging, reliable, and organized Recreation and Athletics Specialist 3 to join our committed team at the Behavioral Health and Treatment Center - Steilacoom Unit in Lakewood, WA. Steilacoom Unit provides competency restoration treatment to residents in a 30-bed residential treatment facility in Lakewood. In this role, you'll have the opportunity to use your creativity as you provide innovative recreational and leisure activities that include sports, social activities, drama, arts, and music.

- Develop a schedule of recreational activities to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of individual clients or groups of clients.
- Complete annual Recreation Therapy assessments for a designated caseload of clients.
- Plan, organized, and directed part of the recreation program including group or individual activities, outings, and special events for clients in the facility.
- Work in one or more skill areas, directing, conducting, or instructing in programs of sports, social activities, drama, music, outings, literature, and arts and crafts.
- Assist, or contact, community resources in planning special events.
- Confer with clinical or other staff members to determine recreation programs for individual clients or groups, as well as participate in meetings and conferences with the Interdisciplinary Team.
- Prepare oral and written progress reports.
- Initiate requisitions and distribute recreation materials and equipment for the recreation program.
We are looking for:
- Experience working in an inpatient facility for adults with mental illness.
- Demonstrated good judgment in supporting clients in behavior crises by emphasizing the helping relationship using program-approved methods.
- Knowledge of many fields of recreation activities, including specialized knowledge of several broad areas such as; sports, dramatics, music, social activities, arts and crafts, organizing, conducting, and directing recreation activities.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations with individuals with mental illness.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and peers.

- Bachelor's degree involving major study in:
- Recreation or therapeutic recreation OR
- Music/drama, or physical education OR
- Psychology, sociology, or education with a minor in recreation, physical education, music, or drama
- Two years of paid professional recreation experience
- One year of experience as a WA State Recreation Athletic Specialist 2
