The Department of Social and Health Services is hiring an energetic and progressive fire service leader who can generate commitment and momentum around a compelling vision aligned with DSHS and Special Commitment Center priorities. The ideal applicant for Fire Chief at the Special Commitment Center on McNeil Island will have a history of leveraging innovative leadership strategies to maintain high service standards and cultivate accountability. They will have extensive fire service operational experience, and be a proven, frequently sought-after mentor. The individual selected will be known for uncompromising integrity, adherence to stellar professional standards, and unabashedly dedicated to increasing department diversity and advancing the DSHS commitment to equity and inclusion.
The Fire Chief plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the work of 9 career staff, including all aspects of structural and wildland fire suppression, emergency medical service, marine operations and water rescue, technical rescue, hazardous material response and mitigation, training, prevention, inspection services, and equipment. Additionally, they provide daily administrative oversight for department staff, emphasizing safety, provision of high-quality customer service, and professional development. Legal and regulatory compliance assurance, promotion of inter-agency collaboration, inter-local agreement administration, policy development, and labor relations are but a few of the additional responsibilities compromising the full scope of the Fire Chief's managerial duties. Periodic emergency response involvement and duty officer service ensure the Fire Chief maintains a comprehensive view of the Fire Department.
Who should apply?
Four years of experience as a lieutenant or above at a fire department involved in fire suppression activities.
Or
Two years of experience as a lieutenant or above at a fire department involved in fire suppression activities including at least one year as a fire codes enforcement officer.
And
Emergency Medical Technician license.
Special Commitment Center employees ride a passenger ferry between Steilacoom and McNeil Island. The trip is approximately 20 minutes each way. In addition to the advertised salary, employees receive $10 per day premium pay and a free Orca card for use with public transportation.
Opportunities performed on-site at this work location will be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary.
