Stationary Engineer 2 - Boiler Operator  

Our team at The Department of Social and Health Services is looking for a Boiler Operator for the overall operation and maintenance of high-pressure boilers at Western State Hospital. We need your mechanical knowledge and experience to operate and maintain high-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment.

Opportunities performed on-site at this work location at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary. 

Pierce County employees are eligible to receive an Orca Card for transportation needs.

The work schedule is as listed below:

4pm – 12am, Tuesday - Saturday 

What you'll do
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a high-pressure steam plant consisting of 4 high-pressure boilers
  • Operate one or more high-pressure boilers to maintain constant steam pressure and flow, program and reset electronic/digital controls
  • Test boiler room equipment for safe operation
  • Test and chemically treat/clean boiler water, condensate, and mechanical room equipment 
  • Perform preventative maintenance on boilers
  • Monitor and adjust pneumatic and electronic controls, and variable speed drive controls
  • Change out and clean oil burner guns, monitor level in fuel oil storage tank, and monitor leak detecting device for fuel oil tank
  • Shut down malfunctioning equipment or system and transfer to auxiliary equipment or system as required for the safe operation of the plant
  • Transfer fuel used as necessary and start-up or secure standby equipment for load changes
  • Rebuild and assist with maintenance needs as necessary to continue safe operations
  • Work as a relief engineer in time of need to cover personnel on leave 
 
Who should apply
  • Professionals who have 3 years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationary or marine high-pressure boilers and heating systems.
Or
  • A certificate of completion of an advanced Stationary Engineer course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college and 2 years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationary or marine high-pressure boilers and heating systems.
Or
  • One year of State service as a Stationary Engineer 1.

Desired 
  • Knowledge of combustion principals
  • Knowledge and ability to light off high-pressure boilers multiple burners, with manually operated equipment, without the use of control devices, parallel them, transfer control to the loops controls, and put the boiler into service
  • Knowledge and experience in the testing and analysis of feed water for the operation of steam boilers and auxiliary equipment
  • Knowledge of auto flame parallel positioning linkageless burner management computer control systems
