DSHS WSH Medical Assistant

In this role, the Medical Assistant provides clerical and administrative support in the laboratory. Responsibilities include utilizing knowledge of department procedures, computerized Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), and healthcare management software to ensure patient laboratory orders are accurately entered and processed in a timely manner. Secondary duties involve assisting with venous blood collections, performing medical clinic functions such as electrocardiograms (EKGs), and supporting healthcare professionals in examination rooms as time allows.

Pierce County employees are eligible to receive an Orca Card for transportation needs. 

Opportunities performed on-site at this work location at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary. 

Some of what you'll do:  

  • Follow up with providers on lab orders and input data into the LIS.
  • Perform data entry of patient demographics and tests ordered.
  • Answer questions about specimen requirements, test results, and other requests.
  • Document and resolve issues with problem specimens.
  • Run “Pending Labs Report” and manage outstanding lab orders.
  • Recognize and respond to mistakes on test orders.
  • Monthly reporting and reconciliation of lab paperwork and billings.
  • Perform venipuncture procedures and act as a backup for ordering and checking lab supplies.
  • Conduct electrocardiogram (EKG) testing and assist in clinic duties as time allows.

  • Work independently and handle high-paced, stressful environments.
  • Preferred experience with phlebotomies and electrocardiogram testing.
  • Safeguard confidential information and maintain resident privacy.
  • Identify and report serious and sensitive issues to supervisors.
  • Interpret and implement complex policies, rules, and regulations.

Who should apply?

Professionals with Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the American Association of Medical Assistants or the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA).

OR

High school graduation or equivalent and one year of experience providing direct patient care in a healthcare setting.

Equivalent education/experience.
