The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Northeast Region, we are looking for a full-time, permanent Forest Health Engine Captain (Wildland Fire Management Supervisor) to join our team at our Omak, WA duty station.

This position is responsible for providing critical wildland fire support or firefighter training during the wildfire season as an Engine Captain. When not engaged in fire suppression/training activities, the Forest Health Engine Captain is responsible for delivering on key forest health treatment activities including, but not limited to prescribed fire prep, planning and implementation, monitoring fuels mitigation and management. Including thinning, piling and burning, treatment area flagging, and other forest health-related activities. Data management and reporting associated with accomplished activities.Responsibilities:
  • Fire Suppression 
    • Serve as a critical member of DNR’s Wildland Fire Suppression Team.
  • Forest Health 
    • Conducts prescribed fire and fuels mitigation work related to forest health treatments across all lands, with specific priority given to private, community, federal, DNR trust lands and other state (non-DNR Trust) lands.
  • Wildland Fire Training
    • Assist and/or lead in-house district training courses as assigned under the direction of the supervisor. Elements include safety, equipment usage, fire behavior, fire suppression strategy and tactics, aircraft support, origin identification and protection, and the Incident Command System.  
  • Supervision
    • Assign work to subordinate staff.
    • Setting performance standards and expectations.
    • Monitoring work performed by subordinate staff, and providing appropriate feedback.
    • Evaluating and documenting performance
    • Guiding training and development planning.
  • Community Wildfire Prevention/Preparedness 
    • Deliver activities that support and promote community resilience to wildfire that achieve a co-benefit to forest health.
Required Qualifications: 
  • Two years of related field experience.
  • NWCG qualified as a Single Resource Boss (Engine or Crew) and Incident Commander Type 5.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience with computer applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and GPS.
  • Experience with the following: 
    • Mapping tools/applications (Avenza/GPS etc.)
    • Smoke complaints 
    • Public education (prevention/regulation) 
    • Tree/brush-thinning/pruning/piling 
    • Rule/permit burning 
    • IFPL and FDR zones 
    • Fire Prevention Programs (Smokey events) 
    • Fire Suppression 
  • Professional writing and verbal communication skills and ability to work with the public, sometimes under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to act promptly and use good judgment in emergencies.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • The fire suppression and prescribed fire work is strenuous outdoor work in all weather conditions. Must be able to traverse uneven and mountainous terrain e.g. very steep terrain; rocky, loose, or muddy ground surfaces; thick vegetation; down/standing trees; wet leaves/grass; varied climates (cold, hot, wet, dry, humid, snow, rain; high altitudes; heights; holes and drop offs; very rough roads; open bodies of water; isolated/remote sites. Might need to work in close quarters, with limited/disrupted sleep.
  • This position will be assigned an agency vehicle. The position requires significant driving and field visits within a geographically assigned area.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • Must pass the arduous level work capacity test annually to continue employment in this position at DNR.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Natural Resources, Forestry, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Preferred NWCG Qualifications: 
    • Incident Commander Type 4 
    • Strike Team Leader or Task Force Leader 
    • Wildland Fire Investigator 
    • Multiple Single Resource Boss qualifications
    • Prescribed Fire Burn Boss 2 (RXB2) 
    • Fire Effects Monitoring (FEMO) 
    • Firing Boss (FIRB)
  • Experience with:
    • Prescribed Fire Operations 
    • Burn Plan Writing 
    • DNR Burn Permit Regulations 
    • Silvicultural techniques to improve habitat for fish and wildlife 
    • Silvicultural techniques to improve forest health 
    • Monitoring and/or data collection for fire effects, forest insects and diseases, and/or forest health conditions 
    • Fire Effects and Fuel Load Monitoring 
    • GIS applications 
    • Survey 1-2-3 
    • Field Maps.
