The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill three Highway Maintenance Worker 2 positions in Union Gap, WA. This is an in-training opportunity that offers a career path, hands-on learning, and mentorship and allows you to progress upward through the Highway Maintenance Worker series and achieve the goal class of a Highway Maintenance Worker 2. The selected candidates will assist with the area’s maintenance and repair of the state highways and highway structures to ensure the traveling public's safety. These journey level positions will serve as members of the regional maintenance organization and will perform asphalt and concrete maintenance, traffic control, repair and installation of guardrail and signs, as well as culvert and drainage maintenance. Working in the maintenance area requires responsible, safety-minded individuals to perform a variety of skilled labor tasks and operate highway equipment and tools. These opportunities are perfect for someone who enjoys working with their hands, knowing their work is done on roadways and in a variety of weather conditions.
What to Expect
These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors, often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. A typical schedule is Monday through Thursday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. Occasional call-out/call-back for overtime required.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:
- Perform general roadway maintenance and repair activities such as:
- Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair.
- Drainage maintenance including catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches.
- Erosion and slide repair.
- Sign maintenance and repair.
- Guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair.
- Vegetation control, such as mowing or spraying.
- Highway debris removal, including danger tree removal.
- Safely operate Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A, B and C equipment for maintenance operations.
- Perform winter snow and ice removal, which includes operating dump trucks and sanders, as well has hauling sand and gravel.
- Design and set-up of traffic control, which includes manually flagging traffic or signing for lane closures and operating attenuator/buffer truck.
- Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools which includes sharpening power saws and chains, washing vehicles, and greasing tools and equipment, etc.
- Lead and train others in the absence of the Highway Maintenance Worker 3.
- Effectively use radio, phone, computers, and electronic devices to communicate and document data.
- Negotiate rough and steep surfaces during the performance of job tasks.
- Respond to call out emergency’s day, night, weekends and holidays as needed.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 level, the following are required:
- Experience performing roadway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or heavy equipment operation.
- Washington Class B CDL and a current medical card. (Must obtain CDL Class A within 12 months of hire; Agency will assist with training for this license.)
To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 level, the following are required:
- Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, farming, excavation, construction, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent.
- Class A CDL with N endorsement and a current medical card.
- Basic computer skills and ability to operate a computer, iPad, and other electronic equipment for maintenance accountability, timekeeping, and checking emails.
In addition, the following are required:
- The ability to transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
- The ability to respond to emergency call outs, work different and/or extended shifts on short notice (days, nights and weekends), and perform standby duty.
- Ability to report in service to assigned duty station for an after-hours call.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions, confined spaces, uneven terrain, and next to fast high volume highway traffic.
- Ability to traverse steep, rough and uneven terrain; work at heights above 25ft over land or water; work in heat and around hot asphalt.
- Ability to operate Class A, B, and C equipment w/current technology in highway maintenance operations.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- High school diploma, or a GED certificate, or equivalent.
- Traffic Control/ Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.

- These are in-training positions that offer a career path, hands-on learning, and mentorship. These positions allow you to progress upward through the Highway Maintenance Worker series and achieve the goal class of a Highway Maintenance Worker 2. Candidates will be considered for a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or Highway Maintenance Worker 2, depending on their qualifications. Annual salary levels for each position are:
- Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $46,920 - $56,880
- Highway Maintenance Worker 2: $52,920 - $64,440
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28of the Washington Administrative Code.
