The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking to fill two Highway Maintenance Worker positions on the Incident Response Team (IRT) in Seattle, WA. The IRT staff is specially trained to quickly relocate and assist stranded motorists and are the first line personnel responding to daily emergencies including assisting at collision scenes and removing debris. They partner with the WA. State Patrol and other emergency responders to restore traffic flow as safely and quickly as possible.
  
This position will patrol designated state highway segments in the greater Seattle and Eastside Metro area, including floating bridges and express lanes.  The future incumbent will operate a push truck or tow truck to move vehicles to a safe location.  And using a WSP high band and WSDOT 800 MHz radio Communicate with the Washington State Patrol, and the traffic management center.  This position will use a variety of personal safety equipment as required of the job including performing CPR if needed.
  
The WSDOT Incident Response Team is the first line personnel responding to daily emergencies; clearing roads and helping drivers. Incident Response Team (IRT) members quickly relocate and assist disabled vehicles/occupants and keep travel lanes open and traffic flowing on state highways during peak traffic flow periods. In addition, they identify and arrange for environmental cleanup needs and expedite reopening lanes.
 

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, Incident Response Highway Maintenance Worker will:

  • Patrol designated state highway segments during peak traffic flow periods looking, marking, relocating and assisting disabled vehicles/occupants to keep travel lanes open and traffic flowing.
  • Assist disabled vehicles, including changing tires, providing gas, jump starting vehicles, and removing debris weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Respond to and coordinate with WSP, ICS and emergency responders at incident scenes.
  • Establish and perform traffic control functions; set up signs for lane closures, road closures and detours.
  • Learn to independently clear accident scenes.
  • Safely operate a push truck or tow truck with wheel lift, tow sling, vehicle dollies, and a push bumper to relocate vehicles.
  • Perform First Aid/CPR when necessary.
  • Prepare reports for each incident.
  • Professionally operate a WSP high band and WSDOT 800 MHz radios


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, truck driving, traffic control, construction, timber operations, or landscaping.
  • Possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Washington State Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with Endorsement "N" or ability acquire within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to communicate on multiple radio systems or other electronic devices including computers, in a brief and concise manner.
  • The skills to safely work in heavy traffic conditions without continuous supervision.
  • The skills to safely perform emergency operations including but not limited too; changing flat tires, providing gas, jump start vehicles, deploy appropriate traffic control, etc.
  • Ability to provide positive professional customer service in extreme hazardous situations.
  • Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) Courses in FEMA ICS 100,200, and 800 within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to remove debris weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call. 
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, alone or a part of a team as needed.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Experience in traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones, and flagging operations. 
  • Be available for standby when assigned. 
  • Working knowledge of the WSDOT rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience with radio communication equipment, computers, phones and other electronic equipment. •
  • Comfortable with working near high volume and high-speed traffic.

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • King County legislative approved 5% salary premium is included in the listed salary. The 10% Assignment Pay is included in the salary.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
